VPN Conflict with ActiveSync 4.1
Here's the thing: I recently acquired an Axim X51 at work and succeeded in setting up ActiveSync 4.1 to work on my work PC - a Windows 2000 one. I then took it home to set up a sync with my home PC - a Windows XP Prof'l PC. It would not finish installing... it wouldn't set up my "profile" to hook into Outlook.
I tried disabling the firewall and my Norton Antivirus to see if that would help: no go. So I finally resorted to calling Dell tech support and waiting the 30 minutes for a live person. This live person asked a number of questions mostly pertaining to things I'd already tried. Then he asked if I had a VPN installed. I did have a Cisco VPN, and I use it to communicate with my work when needed. He said that the VPN may be the culprit, so I uninstalled it, and the sync "magically" started to work. If I reinstall the VPN, it will once again disable the ActiveSync. So now I have sync'ing, but no VPN. Does anyone out there know of a way to have my cake and eat it too? I really need both. One other question: I had successfully installed the sync on my laptop but had to sacrifice that sync since ActiveSync only allows access to two PC's. Does anyone know of a fix from Microsoft to overcome that limitation? (I use my laptop when on the road, and being able to sync to it would be very convenient.) My old (and now defunct) Palm Pilot used to hook up via serial connection and had no problem with 3 PC's or with VPN. I really miss that flexibility. TIA on this. Since I'm new to the list, I'm not familiar with all the ins and outs of this site, but I checked the box to say daily email notification. If that's not the way to do it, could I ask for helpful responses to be emailed to me at dbmcgaw@sbcglobal.net? -Doug McGaw Emporia, KS

as far as your vpn issue goes, i found this online:
If you are using the Cisco VPN client and you can't sync after installing ActiveSync 4.x, try uninstalling ActiveSync 4.x and the Cisco VPN client. Then install ActiveSync 4.x followed by the Cisco VPN client. Another alternative is to disable the stateful firewall by going into the option menu and selecting the option to disable the Stateful Firewall. this might clear the issue up. as for syncing with more than 2 pc's....i'm not sure i follow you. i've never heard of this issue before.

Thanks for the advice. I tried it, but it still doesn't work. So I re-un-installed the VPN and will use direct dial-up when I need to get into work. As to the 3 PC issue, it's just wanting to be able to sync to work, home, and laptop all together. -dbm
