I've just got a new WM5 HTC TyTN and I want to sync it the same PC that I sync my WM2003SE Dell x50v with. I have heard that ActiveSync has problems syncing more than one device per computer and i was wandering what problems I may encounter... are there any work arounds and which version of Active sync (3.8 for compatibility with 2003SE or 4.x for compatibility with WM5) would enable me to sync both devices most successfully?
ActiveSync is capable of syncing more than one device. However, some things to be aware of:
1. You will need to upgrade to AS 4.x as it is required for WM5 devices. Unfortunately, you will lose the ability to wifi sync.
2. If you want to maintain separate profiles for each device, you will either have to use separate Windows logons, or create separate Mail profiles in your Control panel. If you choose the latter, you will be prompted to select the profile you want to sync with.
3. Make sure you give each device a unique name. However, this will not ensure separate profiles unless you do step #2.
Thanks for the quick reply, version 4.x it is then but what are profiles, what effect does running both devices under the same profile have, and similarly for separate profiles on each device? I only need one shared set of contacts/emails/tasks & notes and want these to be both duplicated and changable from either device... would this be what having both devices under a single profile enable me to do?
If you want to keep your PIM info combined, then yes, you would only need one profile. Separate profiles allows you to keep separate Outlook databases.
That's clear enough, one profile, 2 devices, different names and active sync 4.x... Gigi you're a star that's exactly what I needed to know... How did you get 7 awards!
but tell us about the TyTN... It's the device that looks like it comes closest to hitting the combined phone/pda sweet spot.
How are you getting on with it?

Only had it going for about 6 hours so not had chance to try anything but the basics ... Display crisp & clear, needs extra storage only about 50MB free & 30MB program memory free. Keyboard not bad at all, comfortable for short SMS and emails. Navigation through different functions... not so good, but this mostly down to Microsofts 'philosophy' of getting users to do things their way rather than what's most intuitive therefore for easy access I'll probably install SPB Pocket or similar as on my Axim. The unit has lots of buttons, only one I've missed so far is easy way to adjust phone volume without using the stylus. Text, phone, camera all fairly easy to access, but being Microsoft not as easy as they could be to control. Stylus at bit stubby for my tastes but functional, and stylus free operation is possible, if slightly clunky... Camera tends to bleach a bit but quality a noticable improvement over previous generation such as Imate JAM/Qtek S100.
Overall quirky but I think I'll enjoy using it as I get used to it... anything else you want to know?
With several of the basic apps open (i.e. running in the background) , e.g. media player, calender, contacts, camera, phone the is almost no lag switching between them, but then again I've not synced all my notes, tasks and contacts onto it yet... but initial impressions are that the device is actually quite nippy.
Been trying out the TyTN speed is actually pretty good. Speed with several apps open at once now I have data loaded is fine. It opens Notes (around 200 items) faster than my Axim x50v and internet access is MUCH faster with IE. Battery life also beats the Dell hands down. WiFi on the Dell gives me 1 1/2 hours of just casual browsing before battery low but on the TyTN I've just got 40 minutes of streaming radio with only 20per cent drain. Reception in weaker signal areas is'nt as good though but it's fine if the signal is moderate or better. Overall v pleased with the TyTN so far...
Nice annimation Wollombi (apologies if thats spelt wrong...)... Still liking TyTN and I am v pleased with it. Small -ves with more use are stubby stylus, occasional signal loss on wi-fi (although my X50v does that too) and no easy way to adjust PDA/Phone volume without getting out stylus or using fingernail... but these are minor gripes on what is otherwise a very good machine. Wouldn't have got one without contact though... £500+ is too much for a phone + I got mine for expansys.co.uk and as long as you get the TyTN as I did (Orange have their own branded version too now) then it's unlocked even with a contract (mine was O2) so when contract expires or raoming abroad you're not locked in ... bonus! :approve:
Active Sync is capable of syncing more than one device, but you have to keep swapping between them. You can't sync both at once. I have two Axims (30i and 51v), to pull them out of their two cradles, reinsert the one I want synced, then swap over when I want to sync the other one. It's a pain in the neck.
