Solution: rapimgr.exe eating 100% CPU

I thought I'd post a solution here in case anybody come surfing by with this problem: :)
I've been having serious problems with rapimgr.exe taking upp 100% CPU time on every startup and the wcescomm.exe not being able to connect or sync.
Just now I tried killing all of my user processes (good way to troubleshoot btw) and found out that it was my FTP-server (FileZilla) that was causing rapimgr to loop infinitely. And indeed, it seems like the rapimgr tries to connect to the filezilla server according to the ftp log file.
*smacks that M$ dev-guy in the face*
Now I'll just have find out how to run my ftp alongside activesync...

what happens when you change your ftp server port? i'd try running the server on a nonstandard port (ie: not 21) and see what happens.

Yes, on closer examination of the Filezilla server settings, I found that the server was set to listen for SSL/TLS connections on port 990, which I recognized as one of the ports activesync uses. So changing it to for example 9900 solved it. When set to 990 the FTP server interface tells you that IP number 169.254.2.1 tries to connect to the server, which I imagine is the IP of the server/gateway part of rapimgr or wcescomm.
The problem with changing from port 990 is just that nobody can connect over SSL my ftp unless they specify the new (non-standard I guess) secure connection port.

Aximsiteactivesyncicon No need to switch ports

If you switch the FileZilla Server service to manual, reboot. RapiMgr.exe will not become runaway. Then start the server. Sill no problem. Sync PDA, still no problem. What I think happens is that once activesync dosn't find default port 990 it syncs with the proper stuff. This is way over my head. I am going to try to talk the the developer, and see if he can do somthing like stealthing 990 until a connection attempt is made, then only showing 990 to the attempting connection. But for now, you can set Mozilla FTP Server to manual, and just start it when you need it.

Thanks for the tip, GlassWalker. Luckily for me, I seldom need to sync something, so I get by now when I've got myself a 4 GB memory card and a (much faster than AS) card reader, and have ordered a FON WLAN router.

Cool, never synced any other way, but. Wont you still need to run AS even when syncing via WiFi? Or are you just going to do backups and such with your memory card?

I am syncing less and less. But I only have the ftp server just in case, so for now i am leaving it in manual. I am still going to talk to the FZ folks, and see if they can help. Might even throw some money their way.
