Exclamation Upgraded to AS v4.2 - Now it's all hosed!

Yesterday afternoon I downloaded Active Sync off of Microsoft's website and installed it. After connecting my device to the USB cradle I received an error that my device was unable to sync w/ the MS Exchange server. The host PC that I run AS off of is on the same domain as the server (I’m not sure if this plays a role or not...)

Either way, in an effort to restore connectivity to the Exchange Server I deleted the connection profile both on the device and the host PC. When AS pops up w/ the connection wizard it instructs me to plug the USB cradle into the PC, then place the powered on device in the cradle. "Active sync should automatically detect your device" - this NEVER happens.... I've tried any combination of reinstalling active sync, soft * hard reset of the axim, numerous reboots of the host PC post uninstallation & reinstallation.... I've scoured over the MS support documents trying all suggestions they offer, still no sync!

I am the very NOT proud owner of a literally $500 paperweight.

Please, anyone, help!

Thank you so much!

Just uninstall the new version and roll back to the old one? Why upgrade in the first place?

EDIT: Forgot to mention"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Disabling the firewall did not produce any different results....

Tried this... not even the software from dell will recognise the damn thing now.

I'm infuriated!

This POS is now for sale in a local classified.....

The worst part is that my girlfriend warned me not to buy anythng from Dell...

Just this afternoon I downloaded and installed ActiveSync V4.2, replacing the V3.7.1 that I had been using.

I followed the instructions and in particular the detailed instructions for adding the ActiveSync application processes into my firewall's exception list. I did not disable my firewall nor antivirus nor antispyware during the installation. I did make the firewall rule changes prior to attempting an activesync.

It all seems OK so far. I've done a few syncs, I've rebooted my PC and soft reset my PDA, I've installed some software onto the PDA.

However, I am not using nor syncing Outlook eMail, only Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, SplashID, PocketQuicken, and Files.

UPDATE: Although, it does appear that there are now several processes that perpetually run on the PC, consuming resources and locking a log file so that it grows uncontrollably.

I had to create a shutdown script to delete this file.

I tried 4.2 and it really is a crock; I went back to 4.1 which is happy to sync everything from my X5 - X51v; having said that it does get all cranky from time to time but on the whole reasonably stable for AS :-)

4.2 seems to be working fine for me, with the reservation regarding the unbounded growth of that log file (which I have "corrected").

The recommended ZoneAlarm Configuration gave ActiveSync more than it needed in my implementation, so I modified it, denying ActiveSync the ability to act as a server and to send mail and it seems to still work, and a bit faster.

I'll have a look at the "instructions" you linked in your post; I found a USB connection troubleshooting guide but it was much different than the one you referenced.

Thanks for your insight on this issue.

Good luck! In the back of my mind there is a little voice telling me I was just lucky and that A\S is just toying with me and laying in wait for the opportunity to self-destruct.
