I would stick with 3.8 if it works for you. Versions 4.x do not allow wifi sync and are notorious for firewall issues.

I echo Gigi, use 3.8. Do not use anything else.

I was successful in going to 4.2 and using it with my WM2K3.2 X50V and my firewall. However, I do not activesync email nor do I WiFi activesync. There are a couple of threads around here about it. If you want or need the .Net CF 2.x and do not want to use someone else's .CAB extraction of it, you will need to go to A/S 4.x to be able to install it.
