Picky question re syncing to Outlook
I am switching from a Palm device (Clie) to an x51v this week. It will be new, so I assume it will have A12 version ROM and AS 4.2. My question has to do with Active Sync and Outlook 2002 SP3, specifically on a laptop that connects with Exchange (2003, I think) at work and has offline folders when I'm not at work (rarely used). In addition, I run 2 profiles on XP Pro: work (on work's domain) and home (for home wireless network, basically a workgroup, I guess). I believe I read somewhere that I cannot sync when not connected to Exchange. Is this accurate? The problem that presents to me is that I will do most of my installation of programs after work at home. After things are settled (will that ever happen, BTW?), the need to sync at home is minimal. Is it possible to configure AS to ignore Outlook when I'm at home?
Thanks in advance. The knowledge of the members here is really impressive!:approve:

I can't answer your main question, but I am pretty confident you won't get ActiveSync 4.2 on the CD (probably 4.1). You should probably just download 4.2 from Microsoft.
New units seem to be shipping with A12, but you should double-check yours.

Thanks for the reply. Since posting, I wondered if I could sync at home after unchecking the Outlook-related items on either the PC or the Axim. (I'm still shooting in the dark until I finally get ahold of the thing!)

You can tell ActiveSync what type of items to synchronize, so to disable Outlook synchronization you would disable syncrhonization of Contacts, Calendar, E-mail, Tasks, and Notes. You would do this when prompted during the first time you put the PDA in the cradle (with ActiveSync already installed).

So, I could sync when at home (not online with the Exchange server) if I de-select those items, and re-select them whenever I am at work? I'm assuming I can make those changes at will through Active Sync.

Well I am definitely not an AS pro, but I also use my x50v at work and home. I am using AS 4.2 in both places as well. My home and work PC's both are running XP Pro SP2 and MS Office 2003. My work PC connects to an Exchange server for mail. My PDA syncs with both PC's and not the work exchange server. The only thing you can not do is sync your Inbox at both locations....I think. So at work I sync my Tasks and Calendar and Favorites and at home I sync My Contacts, Inbox, Calendar, Favorites and Tasks. It all seems to work very well for me. Here's some screen shots of my work sync options:

Don't know if any of this will help you or not!!!

Thanks! You give me some hope. My answer may still hinge on whether AS can act differently on the 2 profiles on one computer. I'll keep my fingers crossed. :)

ActiveSync keeps those settings individually for each PC it syncs with, so you may not have to toggle the settings yourself once you get them set (but you may have to do it through ActiveSync on the PDA, in the same way as people do the fake server trick).

Are you using network profiles (where you boot the PC into one or the other) or Outlook profiles?

By profiles, I meant profiles on XP itself. Specifically, when I boot up into Windows, at the Ctrl-Alt-Del logon screen, the drop-down list after username and password has 2 choices: 1. the name of work's network domain and 2. "This computer". At work, I log onto the first profile, and at home I log on to "This computer"/local machine profile.
Does this help? Does AS initially install to all users on Windows, or not? If so, I wonder if it's smart enough to know there are different AS settings for different Windows profiles.
Thanks again for your help!

Ah, user profiles, now I get it. They are treated separately by windows, as if they were (well, they are) completely separate login accounts. If you look under C:\Documents and Settings you should see a folder for each of those two accounts (if you are using the same username, I believe Windows adds the domain name to the folder name so they can be distinguished from each other).
ActiveSync appears to store its settings on a per-user basis (mine are in C:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync), so this might just work
