If I missed it...sorry, but what OS are you running? If it's Vista, then this sounds all too familiar. The other thing is Outlook 2007 beta. I have read a of threads like this one where Vista and Outlook 2007 were involved. If possible, use Outlook from Office XP or Office 2003.

From what I've read in several newsgroups and MSDN newsgroups, this inability to synch seems to be a common problem, unfortunately. Some people have reported complete success, others no success, while still others had only partial items synching, and the problem is not isolated to Axims.
A few folks have claimed some restored functionality by uninstalling and reinstalling Activesync 4.2, but maybe you've done this already.

I noticed from your post on Christmas day that the screen shot shows 'Windows Mobile Device #2', implying you have more than one windows mobile device connected?
I can only imagine the frustration you're experiencing having been there myself with other Windows components.... I'm really, really sorry if you've already tried what I'm about to suggest (please don't bash your head against the wall!) but this is the way I troubleshoot most things to do with Windows....
1) Delete any instance of the Axim in your network properties (especially any multiple instances)
2) Uninstall Activesync
3) Download the latest 'stable' version of activesync from MS (4.2 I believe) and install it
From memory, I don't think there were any specific drivers to run the Axim (either on the disc accompanying the device or otherwise) however it's possible that XP already had the required drivers installed. What did Dell tech support say about the driver issue?
Try re-installing the Axim with as 'clean a slate' as possible and follow the installation instructions that came with you axim 'to the letter'. i.e., do everything in the exact order as stated. Another thing I usually do with Windows problem is turn to Dr Google. Write down the exact error message(s) you're getting in google and search those terms encased in inverted commas (looks for an exact match in the google results). in order to keep the google results on-topic, throw in x51v in the search box at the end of the error message encased in inverted commas but don't put x51v in the inverted commas. This will look for pages that have your exact error message plus x51v somewhere on the page. Other things to try are using WM5, Axim, etc after your error messages.
I sincerely hope this helps jakg. I share your pain - believe me.
Microsoft and their Activesync deserve a huge kick in the butt
this is a clean copy of XP - its only ever met my Axim, and my Axim only, there arent ANY saved connection settings because it's never managed to conect

hmmm, read the text - think i've found the problem...
Still think there may be something in the whole "Windows Mobile Device #2"
Without going through this whole thread again, have you tried another cradle and/or sync cable. Surely Dell tech support would cave and send you a new axim to try?
no, i haven't tried another cable, but it Syncs fine on my Dad's PC, so i doubt thats the problem.
Plus, i bought this as a refurb, so i'm not sure where i stand with Dell's support
Could trying a different user account help?
My God, it's Hell owning a Dell...
(Actually, the Dell is owning me atm!)

Look in the Device Manager on your XP box. If you see a Windows Mobile device or anything related to the Axim there, delete the device. Activesync will not work if there is a device there. Then reboot. Make sure Activesync is installed on the PC then connect the axim and it should work.
I have a x51v Ao6 I think.
I had never had an issue until one day some tool i work with here plugged his x50 into my cradle.
After this I had the same issue as mentioned in the previous post.
I went to Control Panel and seen the mobile device there.
This is on my work PC and I dont feel like rebooting now.
First thing tomorrow morning this is my plan.
Go to device manager
Delete the mobile device
Mine happens to have (5) beside of it because I have deleted relation ships and uninstalled and reinstalled Activesync several times.
After deleting the device and rebooting
I then plan on inserting the x51v into the cradle and with fingers crossed would suspect this my issue will go away.
Will update tomorrow.

Well it happenned to be lunch time.
I uninstalled the network adaptor the mobile device.
Rebooted and the device came back as mobile device 5.
So this did not resolve the issue.
I can connect and sync after about 3 to 4 tries.
Contacts Favorites Notes
I dont need company garbage email on the axim its my TV
Now from a previous post there is mention of
Start/Settings/Connections/USB to PC
As mentioned earlier I am on A06
This option does not appear in Connections for me.
I will update if I find something that helps me.

Finally decided to take the Axim home and sync with the home pc to see if I had an issue there. At home my PC noticed that I had changed connection names. Windows PC 2 Windows PC3 I deleted both of these and let it sync.
Next day at work put Axim in the craddle and after the 2nd time it sync'd. Same thing this morning. So from my adventure something happenned when I sat my buddies axim in my craddle. Further note I have tried to uninstall Active Sync and then go to regedit and delete any entries concerning Active Sync only. When I reinstalled Active Sync 4.2 again in device manager it notices the connections as device 6 now. Last thought on this subject. Uninstall Activesync, Hard load axim (meaning get it back like day 1 fresh out of the box), go to regedit find anything Activesync, Axim, Windows mobile, X51v, unable to do Dell work PC is a dell. And see where it stands a with the work PC and sync'ing up.
