I'm living with a time bomb.
I've not been able to sync my x51v to my desktop for a few months now.
I've not done a hard reset for fear of data loss.
I finally decided to set up a sync with my notebook but still no success.
There's no simply no connection with ActiveSync 4.2.
My trouble started when I "upgraded" to A12.
I've been told: it's the firewall but so far all the instructions I've read has been rather disappointing. Isn't there anything I can do just to establish connection?
Is it Dell or Microsoft the culprit? How can something so simple as synchronizing be so complicated? This is so disgusting!
You might try stopping your internet connection, then turning your frewall off. That way you will at least know whether it's the firewall getting in the way. Worked for me with X51v, Activesync 4.2, A12 firmware and BlueSoleil bluetooth. Best of luck, don't give up...

If you have tried this, sorry for the repeat, but it fixed my problem. Select -Start-Settings-Connections-USB to PC. Uncheck the Enavle Advanced network Functionality box.
I was reinstalling AS about every other day to keep sync'd Then I found this tip. Hope this Helps.
Finally, after a hard reset, I managed to sync :-)
The good news is I was able to restore my backup data.
Lesson learnt here:
Forget pulling your hair out over sychronization. Just do a full databackup and do a hard reset. It's easier on the hair!
There's only one snitch: be prepared to reload all your applications which can take a while if you've plenty of those. Finally, don't load in all sorts of applications if you don't need them. Just do those you really need.
Incidentally, does anyone know how to synch using bluetooth?
Just point me to the right thread and I'll take it from there. Thanks!
I'm in the boat of PDA acting ever so goofy. I'm tempted to throw in the towel with my PDA... or at least stop using any third party software so that hard resetting is easy enough.

I received advice on this forum to uninstall (not just disable/turnoff) my firewall (third party) and anti-virus, install AS and then re-install the firewall and AV. The theory is that they will allow AS if it is already installed.
I had limited success with this i.e. it worked on one computer but not another.
A hard reset every once in a while isn't a bad thing. Gets all of the cobwebs out and it gives you a chance to re-evaluate what software you want installed.
What worked for me:
There is a way to display the unactive (hidden, old, whatever) device drivers
in the Windows Device Manager. It's a DOS command line, I'll try to remember
to post it when I get home.
Then you delete all the Dell USB device drivers, and reinstall ActiveSync.
I also reinstalled ROM A12, but in hindsight I don't think this is necessary.
If a google search doesn't provide the command line, post up and tonight I'll
add it here.
"First you need to start the Windows Command Line Prompt, by selecting the Run option in the Start menu, entering 'cmd.exe' into the text dialogue and pressing return. This will launch a DOS window into which you type the following commands, pressing return at the end of each:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc
Device Manager will automatically appear after the second command, and now if you go into its View menu and select 'Show hidden devices' you should see quite a few 'greyed out' items referring to missing hardware."

I've had my X51v for two days now. Day one - everything worked great. Day two - would not sync! So, I tried the above fix, and VOILA!, perfect sync within seconds! Thank you ssschmidt and Aximsite!
