This is my first post and my first real problem with my Axim. I appriciate any help in advance.
This is basically a new installation. I had an older gateway that I had the X51v, A06, installed on. It worked fairly flawlessly. Now I purchased a New Dell E510, installed activesync, plugged in cradle . . . nothing. I get a message saying that it can't be detected. Windows finds it when its on the cradle and active sync starts. So far I have done the following:
Moved to a different USB
Hard reset
soft reset
swapped batteries
uninstalled AS4.1
re-installed AS4.1
upgraded to AS4.2
downgraded to AS4.1
upgraded to AS4.5
downgraded to AS4.1
restarted comp.
shut down comp.
There are no partnerships presently and I have re-installed everything as per the instruction manual. I have Norton firewall and I have followed the instructions on how to make it pass the firewall, twice. "Allow usb connections" has been clicked, unclicked, reclicked and clicked again. I have NO idea what to do next. As it sits now AS just says "connecting" and has been for the past hour with no change. No matter what I do, I cannot sync at all.
Have you tried completely disabling Norton's firewall? If you do that and AS works, then you're not far off a solution. If Windows sees the device and AS just never connects, seems quite likely firewall is the culprit ...

Yup, tried that too. several times. I had Norton installed on my old system and the Axim work with no modifying. I'm really at a loss.
Nevermind. I'm a moron. I forgot to have Outlook open. All is well. Boy do I feel Dumb! :D
Had you set up the items you wanted to sync---contacts, calendar, email, files, etc. before you tried to sync? I am surprised that the problem was that outlook wasn't open. I can sync my x51v without having outlook open. I guess whatever works is the key. Can you now close outlook and get it still to sync?
I saw your post and thought maybe this might helped.
First, take a look at my posted message: "I wrote about this about two weeks ago, but the problem seemed resolve itself, so I went no further. Now, the issue has arisen again. When I got home last night I docked my X51V and it synched okay with my home computer. Later, I was having some issues with my Spb Pocket Plus so I uninstalled it and then reinstalled. After that I couldn't get my Axim to synch with the desktop. I went to bed and tried in the a.m.. but still no luck. When I got the office this a.m. the same thing happened on my work pc. - no synch. When I left work last evening the synching was working fine. At work I uninstalled MS activeSync 4.2 and reinstalled it, but still no synch. I have tried multiple soft resets without success. Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts short of a hard reset, ugh?"
I think your issue has to do with the firewall. I went to microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/mcafee.mspx. McAfee is my personal firewall product that I downloaded from Comcast, my ISP. I followed the instructions that they suggested about added in certain information to the firewall, and voila, it worked, almost immediately, as if the dreaded black cloak had been lifted. I am unsure as to which firewall, if any, that you use, but perhaps, it will work for you. If you need more information, let me know. Go to the MS website/windows mobile and find your firewall. Good luck!

Don't let anyone tell you its the firewall. I have had the same issues on both my work computer and home computer. The thing will connect and synch on both computers flawlessly for 2 or 3 days, then the next night on my home computer it will not connect...and the next morning on my work computer it will not connect. Then I soft reset, then I redo my relationships, then I soft reset again, then I revert to a saved system from several days ago, and then it works again for 2 or 3 days and then I go through the same cycle all over again. I first thought it was my Pocket Weather connection. Got an upgrade. Turned it on and off. Worked for a few days. Then wouldn't connect again. Then I thought there was a problem with my Spb backup. I quit backing up automatically. Worked for a couple of days, then wouldn't connect again. How could any of this be the firewall? On two differenct computers...it works, then doesn't - works, then doesn't. When do you give up and accept that the primary purpose of this thing - calendar and contacts, doesn't work and spending a half hour almost every day trying to make it connect just isn't worth it anymore?

I agree, it is not necessarily the firewall.
I was advised in another thread to uninstall (not just disable) my firewall and anti-virus, install ActiveSync and then reinstall the firewall etc. This worked for just a few days, then back to no connection, or a timed out connection, again on two different computers
but then again sometimes (and quite often ) it is..
At least it's something to investigate so you can rule it out.

Okay, so may be you are all right, and I'm wrong! I can only tell you what worked for me and how well ActivSynch had been working for me since last May. Maybe it's the individuality of each Axim. Some are more receptive AS and some less so. Maybe it's just an anomoly. I'll keep you posted on my experience.
I'm having a strange but real problem. AS 3.8 for my Dell Axim x50v has been working great until yesterday. I put my pda on cradle, it begans to synch, and synch, and synch -- in other words, it never stops. I have restarted pc, soft and hard reset pda and still AS will continue to synch without results. NOW here is the really strange part. I downloaded an app I wanted to try. I was able to Install this apps into my cf card while the green circle was still going around and around. What are the chances of this? Never have heard of this.

I was getting that error message that it would not sync and that I should go through that scan procedure, which at the end only directs you to Microsoft. There you are told that one of the issues might be the firewall, which of course, I had already done. So, I decided to uninstall the ActiveSync and then try to reinstall the new AS 4.5 Beta version, which I did. It was successful and the computer and Axim are synched. For how long, who knows. I'm almost afraid to take out of the cradle, for fear that I won't be able to sync it again. The weird thing is, I never had any problems with AS since I got the Axim. Sometimes I had to do soft resets, but it then always synched. So this whole episode is very frustrating.
