Next I brought up the registry editor and tried to change the name of the key. No luck. It doesn't matter if I change first the value data or try to rename. It results in the error.
The thing is that synching actually works after a soft reset and switching the RNDIS off even without changing the name, but the GPS is all confused because it wants to use one of these ports as well and it works over the BT. The GPS works fine until I start playing with the registry.
Grrr, I'm feeling like I have Windows 3.11 again.... :bang: Help would be most appreciated. (see frustration? :))
Thanks,
klausk
Follow up:
synching works if I change all settings for Serial8 to look like it's Serial6 even without renaming the key itself.
GPS works if I change all settings for the Serial8 back to the original settings...
Soft reset is required after the registry changes.
Obviously this is not what I'm looking for but it will do for a couple of days until I figure out what to do...

How about creating a new registry entry named serial6 that has all the same information as serial8. Not sure if this will work because I haven't tried it my self. Kinda scared to start screwing with it again because it is finally working. I'll keep looking to see if I see something on why you cannot change serial8 to serial6.

How about this. You stated previously that you did a hard reset and tried so I'm assuming there are no programs loaded another hard reset wont kill anything.
1. Hard reset
2. install the Broadcom BT stack version .05 that you can get here on the aximsite.
3. Do a soft reset.
4. Do the registry edits as follows:
[HKLM\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\Applications\0001]
Change ComPortNumber from 8 to 7
[HKLM\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\Services\0001]
Change ComPortNumber from 7 to 6
[HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\Serial8]
rename to [HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\Serial6] and change these subkeys acordingly
"FriendlyName"="Bluetooth Serial Port COM6:"
"Dll"="btcedrivers.dll"
"DeviceArrayIndex"=dword:00000006
"Index"=dword:00000006
No need to put the leading zeros(0) in.
5. Close the registry editor saving all changes if asked.
6. Turn off the Axim and wait 2 minutes
7. Soft reset the Axim
8. Restart and check the serial port settings by doing the following:
go to Bluetooth Settings - Services - Serial Port - Advanced and check to see if Com6 and Com7 are there instead of 7 and 8.
I'm using a BT339 GPS. Once I setup the connection with BT Manager using the Explore a Bluetooth device it discovered the services once it paired the GPS. In the GPS software (IGuidance3) I set the setting for Auto Detect the gps settings and it came up with the right com port but a slower bps. I manually changed the bps to something higher once it was found.
Not sure if this is helping or not.

My GPS decided to work with settings for the Serial6 registry key in what is called Serial8. In other words it works now without renaming the key. I don't know why it did not work two days ago... And the activesync works too at the same time. So, as long as it keeps working I will be happy (well, after I fix some other unrelated mysteries). Thanks for helping.

Cool. Glad it worked for everyone. It took me about a week to get things in the order I put them in to get them to work for me.
I really like the new BT stack. Don't understand why dell couldn't just put it on the Axim in the beginning.

Michael,
Thanks - and I agree - BT stack should have been in there in the first place. If you want my guess - Dell probably didn't want to pay royalties....

I think "Access is Denied" is a PHM thing. I got the same message.
I downloaded Resco and was able to change the name without a problem.

Thanks for invaluable help !
I can confirm that not being able to change the key name is indeed related to PHM.
After reading this post I was finally able to make all changes as described in the thread by using TotalCommander's built-in registry editor instead of PHM. (if you're dumb and stubborn and don't RTFM, (just like me), it's under \\plugins in TC). I'm yet to see if I can connect to my GPS receiver and my work laptop, as I am currently busy syncing (first time in 10 hours) to my home PC. :approve:
