My Axim was syncing fine with 4.2 up until about one week ago and then it stopped - Active Sync showed 'No Partnerships'. I have tried everything everyone suggested about uninstalling/reinstalling ActiveSync, checking the device manager (always shows up as Mobile Device #7 or #8), etc. Finally broke down yesterday and called Dell, who had me walk through everything again, except installed 4.5 beta and their final answer- you need to replace your Axim!
I am soooooo frustrated! I have had more problems with this Dell than I ever had with my Palm. I'm seriously considering just switching back to Palm!!!!!!!!! My Axim x50v is only 2 years old and this has been an ongoing issue!!!!!!!!
No, they should replace your Axim. A lot of people have gotten Dell to replace their X50v with an X51v even after their warranty ran out. Their response is ridiculous.

loriss
I had the same thing happen with my x30
Just stopped working and says no partnership.
Did all the same stuff you tried.
Did dell say what broke that you need to replace your PDA now?
I'm with you on the going back to Palm....never had this much problems
Same thing happened to me. I had a X50V and Dell replaced it because I convinced them that WM5, which they said would work with the 50, would not. So, I got the 51 in May 2006, and it was working fine through the early fall, then it just started crapping out both at home and at the office and no longer would sync for more than initially, a couple of weeks, then a couple of days and finally, after only one reinstall of AS. In retrospect, I don't believe it's really the AS, whether it's 4.2 or 4.5. I just think that after a while the Axim gives out and will no longer sync with the AS. After the holiday, I am calling Dell and will see if they will replace my X51V.
Could be a bad cable, could be bent pins on the sync connector. Two years old is old enough to have the individual-pins-backed-by-a-piece-of-plastic connector.
I asked specifically regarding the failure to consistently connect and sync over many weeks, after he offered a replacement unit, "is this a software or hardware issue?" The Dell rep. said it is a hardware issue. I asked two different ways, "What is the nature of the hardware issue?" He answered, "It is sync related issue." Since it was midnight at the time, I didn't want to interrogate him (if it were earlier or a phone call, I probably would have) I responded, "Ha ha...ok Yes, I'll accept a replacement."
I have a hard time believing it is a hardware issue. But they are the "experts." And my IT guy at work did say that the design of the bottom connectors in these units are trouble-prone.
So my apologies for posting this on the "Active-sync" thread rather than the "hardware" thread.
For an added bonus to bring us back to Activsync, when running through the various troubleshooting steps, the Dell rep. told me to load Activesync 4.0 from my original CD that came with the unit. (I told him 4.2 is installed.) I asked him why the later version wouldn't be better. He said "...actually the version shipped on the CD of the axim is the most compatible version for the axim to sync with the computer." Hmm.
same thing happened to me just recently. Have been using the x51v and all of a sudden out of the blue it stops syncing...guess i will call dell and see what happens. Kind of surprised that it is such a "harsh" response..just to replace it.
So, after receiving my new Ax, I tried to restore the files and programs on my old Axim to my new. My old uses ROM A01; the new one uses ROM A12 (which is good news and bad news).
Using Spb Backup, I backed up fine on my SD card. I attempted to restore on the new Ax, and I got the Blue Screen of Death. Got Dell on-line - not much help - he started to say he'll give me a new Ax (2nd in 2 days) - I talked him out of it, suggesting a ROM incompatibility with my Spb Backup, which, without having totally verified, I believe is the case.
I have an e-mail into both Spb and Sprite to determine if either of their backup programs can salvage my programs and file settings.
Bottom line: Everything syncs fine with my clean system.
Advice: Don't load up on peripheral software. Don't load more than one new program a week to allow time to assure yourself that there is no culprit inhibiting your ability to connect and synchronize. The more 3rd party software you have, the greater the chance of software conflicts, including Activsync.
My essential software (must haves) will be comprised of:
Pocket Player
Pocket Weather
Pocket Conquest
Some kind of battery meter display (any suggestions?)
A backup program: one that works with ROM A12 (any suggestions?)
Beyond that, I'll sacrifice the various Outlook overlays and home screens. They make things too complex for me, anyway, and probably for the system. They can't help but slow things down as well as confuse Activsync.
Is there any kind of listing of Windows Mobile 5.0 3rd party software that is guaranteed by an independant party as 100% compatible with the operating system and Activesync? I know that 95% advertise as such. But to me, it is obvious there are incompatibilities. But where they are, I don't know.

Sprite is capable of doing this but you have to plan ahead. You would have had to create a file on the old Ax that is used by Sprite to be able to restore on the new Ax with the updated ROM. It might be a little tricky since you are moving to a new machine instead of just upgrading the ROM. It is always suggested by both MS and Sprite that it is better to install fresh and only restore your PIM stuff anyway through syncing when changing ROM's. The problem with doing a restore accross ROM updates is that some files that were replaced in the new update might be restored from your backup and cause problems. Of course those problems are fixed by doing a hard reset but then you are back where you started anyway.
What's the best way to do that - they said it would cost me $250 for them to replace - so I'm assuming they plan to replace it with a refurbished one! I don't think I should have to pay for it at all!! Any suggestions?

I had an extended warranty. It took me a couple of internet sessions with tech support for them to give up and send me a refurb. Yes, they replaced it with a refurbished unit.
If you are out of warranty, the next best thing is to hard reset and test the connection/sync for a few days. Then start adding your most essential programs every few days - while continuing checking for connectibility/syncability. This should clear up your problem - unless it is a HARDware issue, e.g. the bottom connector going bad.
I decided not to go with the full restore route with a backup program. I figure there is too much of a chance of restoring the same software conflicts/settings that caused my connect/sync problem.
Just Mobipocket Reader and e-Wallet- and I'm beginning to wonder if it's my Dell travel charger/USB cable. Every time I take that on a trip, it stops syncing. I'm going to take my cradle with me this week and see if that works - I just had to do a hard reset and re-install ActiveSync 4.2 - this is like the 4th time I've done it in the past 2 months.
