Just wanted to post another "Activesync sucks" thread in case M$ has some type of bot that trolls the web for user input concerning their products. (If only, huh?)
Sifting through all the Activesync problem threads in the Activesync problem forum as I ponder the problem of upgrading to a problematic AS 4.2 is pretty depressing. It would be nice if my research had turned up a nicely curving trend of decreasing complaints as AS ramped up its version numbers, but alas it seems that with each new release the fundamental problem of UNRELIABLE AND INTERMITTENT SYNCHING continues along merrily.
I suppose that the capability to distill things into a "base" problem, as opposed to the many many specific problems folks have had, should be some consolation at least . . .
For those wondering, I'm running the Microsoft product (Activesync) on two Microsoft products (Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows XP) to synchronize another Microsoft product (Outlook). This is on two devices (laptop and PDA) manufactured by the largest PC maker ever (Dell). One would think that things could be worked out in this simplified scheme of things, ehhhh?
Yep, It sucks, er, or similarly flowery phrase. (I hate that "sucks" expression!). But the ppoint is true, AS is awful. Compared with my Palm which has alomst total reliability for synching, and the Axim with AS 4.2, AS is just nowhere near the bees knees. It just about does it for most of the time, but flakes away to ugh very regularly.

I have no problem with Activesync 4.0 and 4.1. I use it to sync my AXIM X51V to my PC at home and at work. Sync with Outlook works fine, reminders are sync'ed on PC and on AXIM
Only problem is to get connected to Internet to download Weather direct to AXIM, worked before but I think it might be firewall restrictions at work.

There's nothing I like less than bad arguments for a view that I hold dear.
Since about 4 months, I suffer from the same problems decribed: mit AS 4.1, 4.2 and 4.5. I also owned a Palm before, the x51v is certainly superior, but not AS.
I was having all sorts of problems with ActiveSync (uninstalling/reinstalling etc) and was considering using Bluetooth for all my links.
I then came across the following change which works for X51V A12 ROM users: go to Start / Settings / Connections / USB to PC and untick the box 'Enable advanced network functionality'. Ever since I made this change a couple of days ago (can't remember if I saw it on the MS site or Aximsite), I have had no problems with ActiveSync and it has always worked like a dream and looks robust (fingers crossed).
No use to non X51V A12 ROM users but maybe another reason for them to upgrade.
I was with all of you until last week when I finally bit the bullet and did my first hard reset since I got my X51V last May. This was a replacement for two or three X50V's, which I convinced Dell to exchange because Mobile 5 never worked correctly on the 50. I was doing great with my X51V and AS until late last month when the connection crashed and no matter whether I used AS 4.2 or 4.5, nothing seemed to work. I was running A06 on the 51, and I was about to call Dell when I decided that I would perform a hard reset, because I knew that the Dell techs would tell me to do that anyway. Wonders of Wonders, after the hard reset, I had no problems syncing. Then for the heck of it I thought I might as well try and see if Dell would replace my 51 with a 51 loaded with A12. Without too much of a fight they replaced it. It arrived last Thursday. It worked right out of the box. I have keep the software to a minimun on the new Axim because I felt that might have been effecting it. It certainly had slowed it down the prior 51. The new 51 is fast and has synced well for the past week. So maybe the answer is that you perform a hard reset, or push Dell for a new Axim.
Hmm ... odd - I've been using A/S 3.8 for a couple of years and I don't have any problems with it. I've used same Ax, same A/S on 3 machines in that time - no problem with any of 'em.
I did everything which can be found on that homepage: A12, several hard resets, soft resets, new installation of several versions of AS, "enable advanced ...".
It works for a couple of days, afterwards all troubles return. May it be due to hardware? For about half a year, I did not notice any problems at all, suddenly all problems of AS show up. You cannot predict any longer when AS will be working.

That right, CB - but try the 4.x versions

I did a hard reset, and saw that it was able to sync with Outlook finally without a hitch. So it *doesn't* seem like a hardware issue. I had no programs installed after the hard reset... because it would take me a whole day to do that.
I did a restore of all my files with SPB backup, and voila, same old problems returned.
As OS 2005 has taken a hold, more and more programs just hate being installed to the X30 BIS. One good example is SPB Finance. I was having awful AS problems a few months back where I'd been happy with SPB Finance installed in BIS, then I did a SPB Finance upgrade to one version or another, and AS broke. Took me a while to fgure, via a clean install, that SPB finance now only works in the default main memory. Once sussed, problems went away. SO a careful trawl through my other essential prpgrams that were previously in BIS and now needed main memory, and I'm back and working fine. BIS is nearly empty apart from file storage and some stuff that doesn't matter!
