Version 3.7.1 vs 4.2

Hello,

Planning on installing Activesync on my PC tonight. Was reading the tutorial and it is based on an installation of 3.8. I have version 3.7.1 on CD from dell and version 4.2 is available online from microsoft. Which version should I install? Is one better than the other?

I have read several posts on the site and it seems that some are quite reluctant to instal newer versions of activeSync.

Appreciate some feedback

Aleks.

Thanks,

Aleks

I ran 3.7.1 for a long time, eventually going to 4.2 to be able to install the .NET CF V2 without having to deal with the .cabs or extracting them myself.

In any case, HERE is a thread you may or may not have already read.

Thanks for the quick response. Appreciate it. I had a look through the link you provided. Seems like you didn't have many issues with 4.2. Others had some difficulty after installing the newer version. I think I will stick to 3.7.1...at least I will not have to deal with that growing file. Is there anything that I should know about 3.7.1?

Thanks,

Aleks

4.x will not allow you to WifiSync, and any syncing when you locked your computer. This alone forced me to downgrade back to 3.8

I do not think that 3.7.1 is officially supported any longer.

And it looks like the growing file gets truncated at some indeterminate interval.

I don't think 3.8 is available from Microsoft. Perhaps I can find it on downloads.com. I know this is my call, but, based on your experiences...upgrade or no upgrade? At my own risk of course!

Thanks,

Aleks

If you want syncing while your PC is locked (I required it for Internet surfing in bed), get 3.8

I would install 4.2, unless you intend to sync via WiFi, especially if it was the first install. The caveat would be if you are running an odd variety of firewall software on the same PC.

Thanks for the link to the 3.8 Version.

Why does activesync have to be so complicated. It does not seem like the easiest sync software out there. My old palm had a much better interface that allowed for easy access to all saved data. Perhaps it's just me. Maybe I need more experience using it.

Thanks,

Aleks

No, you just about have it. ActiveSync serves a purpose, but does it minimally. HotSync served a similar purpose for Palm and did it better.

However, all that is moot as you have a PPC, not a Palm. There are some alternative sync programs out there. I have not used them.

Good luck!
