ActiveSync version differences--help please

I plan to buy an X51v. Another family member will continue to use the X50v we already own.

I have ActiveSync 3.7.1 loaded on my PC and it has worked fine with the X50v. What do I do about the new version (4.1?) of ActiveSync which will come with the X51v? Am I supposed to remove ActiveSync 3.7.1 and then install ActiveSync 4.1, or should I load 4.1 on top of 3.7.1? And will the X50v work okay with the new version of ActiveSync?

I am confused about all this and have not been able to find any threads about it. I did find the tutorial on ActiveSync 3.8--it looks really good but doesn't anwer my questions.

Any help appreciated.

4.x is designed for x51, it will not work well (or work at all) with x50 2003 version.

4.2 and above may support both 2003 and wm5.

I ran 3.7.1 for a long time since it came on the CD. I installed 4.2 so that I could install .NET CF V2 with the installer without having to use the .CAB directly. I have no intention of installing a BETA (verion 4.5 or whatever) as ActiveSync is close enough to beta in it's released form. Search on my username (AKAJohnDoe)) and the key word ACTIVESYNC here at Aximsite and you will find some more.

I think Active Sync v3.x WILL allow you to sync wireless via Wi-Fi if that is something that interests you for your X50v, assuming it is NOT running WM5.

It is my understanding WM5 devices are only conpatible with ActiveSync v4.x and higher. The catch is AS v4.x does NOT allow you to sync via Wi-Fi.

Hope this helps :)
