Problem Fix: Outlook Contacts won't ActiveSync to Handheld with Norton AntiVirus?
This is an edited sequence of emails with the Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2005 Help Desk:
I could kiss you with a thousand smootchies! I followed the instructions and was able to sync with the worm protection turned off. Then I turned it back on and made a rule for Active Sync. Then I tested it by adding a contact on the Desktop Outlook and it synced with my rule! Then I added a contact on the Handheld and it also synced to the desktop!
I have been trying to get my transition from PalmOS Sony Clie NR70v to Axim51v Micrisoft OS for weeks! This was the last very pesky and very annoying problem.
I am going to post this email to the aximsite.com because there may be others who are suffering!
Thank you again for your speedy and effective intervention! Please forward this email to your supervisor who should know you saved a client from insanity!

Greetings Peggy,
Thank you for contacting Symantec Online Technical Support.
I understand from your email that you are unable to synchronize your Outlook contacts, to your PDA using the Microsoft ActiveSync program.
Peggy, I understand your concerns. Please be aware that there are no known compatibility issues, of the Norton program and the ActiveSync program. However, this issue may be caused if the firewall feature in the Norton program is not configured properly. Please note that the Firewall feature provided in the Norton AntiVirus 2007 product, is a thin firewall and is also known as the Internet Worm Protection(IWP) feature.
The Norton Internet Worm Protection is a firewall that protects your computer from incoming Internet traffic. If you have a program that receives data, then by default Internet Worm Protection blocks the incoming traffic, unless you create a rule to allow the program.
As such, I suggest that you check for the issue, by temporarily disabling the Internet Worm Protection feature.
To disable the Internet Worm Protection (IWP), please follow the below given steps:
1. Start the Norton AntiVirus program.
2. Click on the Norton AntiVirus tab, now click on Settings.
3. Under Web Browsing, click Internet Worm Protection > Turn Off.
4. In the Protection Alert dialog box, click Permanently.
5. Click OK.
6. Close the Norton program and then check for the issue.
If you are able to synchronize with the IWP feature turned off, then I suggest that turn on the IWP feature and then create a rule for the Microsoft ActiveSync program.
To add a new program rule please follow the below given steps..
-- Start the Norton AntiVirus program.
-- Click Options. Click Norton AntiVirus if you see a menu.
-- On the left pane, select Internet Worm Protection.
-- On the right pane, click Program Control.
-- Click Add.
-- Locate the program executable for the program that is having the problem.
-- At the next dialog box, from the drop down menu, click Permit.
-- Click OK.
Please let us know if the issue is resolved and if we can be of any further assistance to you in using the Symantec product.
Regards,
Amey Desai
