Norton NIS 2007 conflict with Activesync?

My laptop that I used to connect my Axim died so I installed Activesync on my desktop and I was quickly up and connected early this afternoon. Now this evening I can't sync at all. AS tries to sync but after a couple of minutes it fails and I get a message on my Axim "unable to obtain a server assigned ip address...". So I check the NIS 2007 log and it shows that each time Activesync is engaged an entry appears in the "Service Activities" category: protecting your connection to a newly connected adapter on Windows based mobile device ip address blah, blah blah."

I have tried diasbling all NIS components (A/V, firewall, anti-intrusion, anti-phishing, anti-spyware) and it STILL does this and adds another entry to the log. I also ensured that the Activesync components "trusted" in the NIS firewall program control list. I also tried many Axim resets and PC reboots. Also upgraded to AS 4.2. Nothing makes any difference.

I have not yet tried to uninstall NIS2007 because the install is so painfully slow. Anyone have any ideas???? Arrrggghh!! This Axim is one arrrggghhh after another.
