Try the usual suspects:
  • Auto updates (Windows has just released a mega-patch) to firewalls and/or AV
  • Reseating the Axim in the cradle
  • Different USB port (primary not hub)
  • Soft reset

When you say ...did your ActiveSync appear in the Computer?; does that mean AS starts on your pc but doesn't connect to the Axim, or does it mean that ActiveSync doesn't start at all?

What Windows update are you trying to start?

Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been having one or two problems of my own!

Can you start ActiveSync manually? (On the pc: Start, All Programs, ActiveSync) If you can, you may be able to connect that way.

I'm still not clear on the update issue: what are you trying to update?

Aximsiteactivesyncicon PC Recovery

I don't know if this information will be of use to anyone; however, following my trial by pc today, ActiveSync refused to work! The pc recognised a new USB Device Dell Axim but would not open Activesync and demanded the installation CD. So, I inserted my original install disk (3.7) and it worked beautifully.

Have you tried unistalling Activesync from your PC, reboot and re-install, reset Ax, see if that clears the cobwebs on your PC and Ax.

It does not open up manually at all. Nevermind the updates sorry.

Umm...my activesync on the pc does not want anything and doesn't even appear when i click it.

Yup i uninstalled rebooted installed AS many times once this problem started occuring and i even rotated between 4.2 and 4.5 but still nothing works.

The weird thing is that about an hour ago i installed ActiveSync 4.5 on the laptop and it is working beatifully with the Axim, but when i close everything and move the Axim to the desktop the problem still persists. The reason i want to fix the desktops' problem is because most of the time the laptop is used by my father when he leaves for work, so i don't have much access to it.

Ok, have you made sure that the firewall is allowing AS access?

When you cradle the Axim, do you get any error messages?

You plug in the Axim and ActiveSync doesn't start? Ok, start AS manually and then cradle the Axim (place the Axim in the cradle) and see what happens. If AS is installed correctly, when the Axim is put in the cradle the pc should see it: if it doesn't, something else is going on.

Well thing is i can't start AS manually at all. When i double click it nothing happens, the AS window does not appear on my computer. Also when i place the Axim on the cradle nothing happens, but i do hear a new hardware beep.

What version of ActiveSync are you running? It might be worth downloading a later version from Microsoft and installing that over your current version.
