I have been rotating between 4.2 and 4.5 both of which i downloaded from Microsoft's website. The version that works on the laptop is 4.5

LOL, I don't think that I gave up, I'm just running out of ideas

I did see a potential solution in another thread, give me a minute or so and I'll find the link.

The three top possibilities seem to be:
  1. ActiveSync was not installed under a userid with full administrative rights
  2. ActiveSync was not installed correctly for use by "all users"
  3. The firewall (AVG in your case, correct?) has not been correctly configured as described in the Microsoft article linked to in an earlier post in this thread

Can't find the link - damn!

However, the fact that you can't get AS running manually suggests that either:
  • Your firewall is preventing AS from starting
OR
  • ActiveSync is corrupt
Notwithstanding the logic of that argument, I have previously come across a different problem that prevented AS starting - lack of memory. It's worth checking to make sure that you have plenty of hdd spare as a lack of space can interfere with the temporary files used to swap information between applications.

Failing that (and assuming that you have tried the other suggestions) I am out of ideas.

My activesync thought about giving me problems today....said it couldn't find a connection .....did I want to create one.... (no thank you)

I decided to try reboot of computer and try again...before I tried anything else...and I lucked out..it worked.....

doesn't mean it will work next time.... but sometimes a reboot clears the problem

If you hear a hardware beep, the computer knows the PDA is there! Then the problem might be the fact that the right program on your PDA isn't starting. Do you use Check Notifications?

Try to connect (craddle) your PDA and then click (in the explorer on your PDA) c:\windows\repplog.exe.

Is it working? Then I can tell you how to solve the problem.

Good Luck,

lol i don't have repplog.exe on my pda's c:\Windows. There are only 4 files that start with R: RecEnd (media), Remnet (program), Rnaap(prog), Rundll32 (prog)
