Outlook Sync dilemma

I have been Active Sync with my home computer, and those contacts are now on my PDA. I want to switch to the office computer. I'll install the Axim software on that computer. But is there any way to get the home contacts (now on PDA) AND the office contacts all in one file on the office computer and the PDA? I think if I simply Active Sync with office, I'll lose all the home contacts.

Sure, when you establish the partnership you should be able to sync all of the information. All you will need to decided is how you treat duplicate entries.

To be sure: backup all of you information on the pda to a card (using a third-party application) before you connect, that way you can always restore if necessary (so you won't loose your data). Afterall, if I amend data on my Axim, when I next sync with my pc, the data is updated on the pc.

Hi, what I don't understand is that if I Active Sync with my office computer, the choice will be either replace handheld with office data, or replace office comptuter data with handheld (home computer) data. Are you saying it will do it differently?

Yes, the synchronisation shouldn't remove data from either machine (unless it's replicated on both). Nothwithstanding my assurance, you should still backup your Axim first. On reflection, you could backup to your home PC as (presumably) you won't be deleting the data off of that either

Think about the synchronisation process for a second: say that you are at a business meeting and exchange contact details with a client. You input the e-card into your Contacts database on your Axim and, when you get home and sync, your client appears on your home PC. This is how people can sync with more than one machine.

I guess this is what I don't understand. If I were to sync with my office computer, and wanted to REPLACE my home data, I would say office computer over-rides handheld. Given that I can do that, this is why I didn't think I can combine both home and office contacts by syncing with the office computer. How is it different? Will I have another option when sync occurs, with office data all different from PDA data (from home computer?)

LOL, I think I may be missing the point! When you connect, the PC won't delete any data - it may update contact information in the direction that you tell it to. Synchronising with the computer doesn't erase anything unless you have updated the same record on both devices - that results in a conflict which you tell AS how to handle.

I recommend backing up as it's good practice. I have never tried to create a new partnership on a new machine with a mature Axim, so I can only surmise that your data will remain safe but logic suggests that if ActiveSync deletes information then it is not fit for purpose. The good news is that it shouldn't matter; you can synchronise with both machines (with the exception of mail) and maintain both sets of data without difficulty.
