Can't connect to my PC continuously with USB sync cable, WTH?!

I have a friend with an axim x51v, he lend me his cable which he uses all the time to sync and charge his x51v. He has an extended 2800 battery, just like me.

But when I try to use it on my laptop, it connects to my activesync 4.5, but then loses the connection, or hangs indefinitely. Only one time it connected fine, but nothing was different on my laptop than it is now. I have 4 different USB ports on my laptop, have tried them all and they all seem to work at first, then disconnect or hang. I've restarted my laptop and my ppc, same thing. And I don't have that Advanced Network Functionality option checked in connection settings (I can't even connect via the cradle with that stupid setting checked).

This is really making me bitter...does anyone have any ideas as to why my laptop is being so fickle with this cable, which I know works? BTW, I'm able to connect via my cradle with no problem, always have, so I know it's not an activesync problem...but would like to charge my ppc when I'm on the go with my laptop.

Thanks in advance!!
