Newbie Question from an Olbie

I feel stupid and I will tell you why.I have owned my X30H for over two years.I set everything up ok and it has been running great all this time.My wifi quite working and nothing I did could fix it.I finally did a hard reset and now it works. If I do a back up it stops working.Ok,I start from scrarch but here is the problem:I can't get my calender or contacts to sync. The X30 connects ok and files and favorites sync ok.Somewhere it says Contacts and Calender isn't installed,no checkbox to check etc.I deleted the partership and starterd all over but no help.It has been so long since I messed with Activesync I guess I forgot some basics.I did a search but I just had eye surgury and all that reading is not working for me.I know this has to be a simple thing but for some reason I can't put 2&2 together tonight.I'm still using AC 3.8 and Outlook 2002.My other X30 is syncing ok.Any help woud be appreciated.

Sounds like you have multiple problems. Please, correct me if I'm wrong:
(1) ActiveSync not syncing contacts and calander
(2) No wifi
(3) Painful eyes

For (1) have you gone under Options in the desktop PC Activesync and checked the boxes marked Contacts and Calander? If so, there is a secondary Options menu in there that you can specify _which_ contacts and clander entries to sync. Make sure that it's set to sync what you need (probably everything). I'm sorry that I don't remember the complete path to the options, I stopped using Activesync when I switched to Linux.

For (2) you'll have to give us a lot more detail. How is your AP set up? How is the Ax configured? Details, details. I recommend starting a new thread for the wifi problem and letting this thread concentrate on the syncing. Also, be sure to use a descriptive title. "Newbie Question from an olbie" does not hint that you are having problems with syncing, wifi, but possibly your eyes!

For (3) I recommend rest. I'm a medic. Do not stare at a computer screen. Wait a week, then worry about your Axim. Your eyes are more important.

Thanks for the reply Dotan. The hard reset did fix the wifi,no problem there. The AC options on the desktop have no check boxes by the calender, task, notes,or contacts.Somewhere at some point it said the former items weren't installed thus no check boxes I guess.Still stumped.

I'm wondering if an MS patch has caused the problem with Outlook and ActiveSync on the PC rather than there being an issue with the Axim.
  • It's always worth checking that you have sufficient memory on your pc - running short on memory can have some odd consequences.
  • It might be worth trying a later version of ActiveSync. I know that you have another device synchronising successfully, but as I understand it, they are different models
Oh, I'm with Dotan - look after those eyes.

Plenty of ram.I notice when I try to set up a new partnership and it ask me to check mark what items I want to synchronize the calender and contacts are listed without a checkbox and notes that they aren't installed. My Outlook has all of my contacts but it seems like it's not conecting to the Axim.Any other ideas?

Have you established a partnership with this Axim on more than one PC?

I have and was able to sync both X30s with my laptop but having trouble with the desktop.I guess it's a partnership problem with the desktop and I'm not sure how to get to the partnership screen to make changes.

Sorry Buddy, I missed your post of the 15th and the site was such a pain yesterday, I guess I didn't search as well as I should have done.

Here's my standard list for ActiveSync problems (I know that you have tried most of them, but they bear repeating for anyone else having trouble):
  • Primary USB port only - don't use a hub
  • Make sure that the pins (connectors in the Axim Sync port) are not damaged or bent
  • Make sure that there is sufficient memory on both devices
  • Make sure that the cradle/cable is not damaged
  • Check your PC's manufacturers website for upgrades/updates for the BIOS and/or firmware
  • Check AV and Firewall settings
Now that I've got that out of the way :) Have you checked to make sure that you are not filtering any categories in either the PC or the ppc version of Outlook?

Have you checked to make sure that AS is set to sync all contacts under this partnership? [AS on PC - Tools, Options..., Contacts, Settings]

Quite often, these little glitches are caused by software conflicts or applications that don't close properly. A hard reset may clear the problem, but as soon as you restore your device from a backup, you restore the problem. If push comes to shove, I tend to:
  1. Make a list of all my applications and their registration numbers
  2. Backup my Axim
  3. Hard Reset my Device
  4. Restore the Regional Settings
  5. Establish a new Partnership
  6. Synchronise my ppc (note, I don't install any applications (particularly Today plugins, until I know that it is not a problem with the OS)
Ok, now comes the ball ache! Each application must be reinstalled separately with a soft reset in between and a synchronisation before the next application is added. Don't be tempted by short cuts! It's important to see if an application is responsible for the problem. Start with any Today Plugins.

This is why I store most stuff on a CF card: I don't need to restore files, etc because they stay safe on the card even when I take dramatic action!

Hope that the eyes are recovering and that this helps.
