Activesync Guest Mode
Activesync keeps falling into Guest mode
I have just installed my Ipaq 2210 onto my office PC with a USB cradle and using Activesync 3.7.1. All worked well was connecting as 'Pocket_PC'. Then connected it to my home PC running Windows XP and Activesync 3.7.1 also with the cradle, and made sure I selected Guest mode only (not partner), all worked well, transferred files etc. Returned to the office and tried to establish a partnered connection for syncronising with outlook and it will only connect as guest!!! Did a soft reset on Ipaw, no change. Have tried rebooting, reinstalling activesync, and even hard resetting Ipaq. After a hard reset it works, that is until I take the device home and connect as a guest on that PC. Real pain. Can someone please help before I reprogram the device with a sledgehammer!!! vince@dereham14.fslife.co.uk

I've never heard of this problem, but I can suggest why it happened. When you synced as guest only, a glitch probably occured which told the iPAQ that it is a guest for all other accounts as well. Uninstalling and re-installing ActiveSync will most likely do the trick. Let us know if that works.

Cheers for the reply XBOXLORD. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Activesync, and it still doesnt work. It seems to work ok, until I connect to another pc as guest, then when I return to the office PC it will only connect as guest. Very odd

Hmm...the only thing I could think of at this point is to call Microsoft or HP to see what they say.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Take a look at Chris De Herrera's site on Activesync connecting as Guest.

Thanks for your comments. I have now found that the connection to my home PC is irrelevant. The Ipaq now gone into guest mode after being removed from the office PC and then replaced in the cradle. This is after a hard reset and full uninstall and reinstall of Activesync 3.7.1 Extremely frustrated!! Does anyone know whether Activesync guest files are left on the PC or Ipaq after an uninstall / reset. The strange thing is that activesync on the desktop shows the 'Pocket_PC' partnership in grey, and yet when you connect the 'Pocket_PC' it reverts to guest.

To correct that issue you have to delete the partnership and recreate it. I have this problem today and it works fine for me.

Hi Ted
I have deleted and re-created the partnership, via the delete partnership option when the Ipaq is not in the cradle. It deletes OK, then allows a new partnership to be created when the Ipaq is placed back in the cradle. This works fine, until it is removed and then replaced. Once back in guest mode the only way out is to delete the partnership and start all over again. Tried to contact Microsoft, but it appears you have to pay £69 +uk tax to ask a simple question. Sucks!

Not sure what pocket hosts is? I dont believe so, unless it is a part of Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional. I certainly haven't installed any additional software, other than Activesync. I was contemplating trying Pumatech's Intellisync, but from what I can see it appears to be a bolt on to Activesync as that must be installed first (according to a friend). I am also not sure how it fares when trying to synch with one pc, and connect with a guest on another.

The workstation is running Novell networking and a network anti-virus software and possibly a firewall, although I have a feeling the firewall was installed on the server not the local workstations. However other workstations in the office that should mirror my setup appear to work correctly, and the Ipaq 2210 does not keep falling into guest mode. I am wondering whether some software previously installed on the Pocket PC or desktop is interferring with the setup. I was surprised that after a hard reset on the Ipaq some icons were still left in the programs directory even though the software was not there? Makes me wonder whether certain partnership info. is left remaining on the Ipaq even after a hard and soft reset.

A hard reset will wipe everything that is in RAM so there should have been nothing on the unit except for what is already in ROM. The only thing that a hard reset will not wipe is anything that is in iPaq File Store (data or installed apps). Still there should be no 3rd Party icon shortcuts left around after a hard reset.
I would like to see if you are running a firewall. If so make sure that you have TCP port 990 open on your workstation. If you have a good backup, try another hard reset. I have heard in a few cases that it took some folk a couple of tries just to get a good hard reset done. After a hard reset see if you can sync consistenly atleast five or six times. Then do another hard reset. Connect your PPC and don't build a partnership but connect as guest. Then restore from your backup (procedures for AS backup/restore). Soft reset and see if you can consistently sync or your guest problems come back.

Thanks for the advice - i will try it in the office tomorrow and check whether a local firewall is running. Also after doing a hard reset today and reinstalling activesync and reconnecting the device to the cradle it fell into guest mode - nothing unusual there! However, this time it seemed to delete all of the programs that appear to be in ROM? How can that be. There were no programs under 'Start' ,'Programs' listed. Very odd, another hard reset and back they came - a little worrying.

Sounds like your device is a little buggy. You may need to have HP flash your ROM. Give HP a call and explain your hard reset troubles to them. They should be able to help.
