Aaaarrrggghhh!!!!! Can't sync with Outlook anymore
Hope someone can help:
iPAQ - 4150 PC - Windows 98 ActiveSync - Vn 3.7.1 (build 4034) Sync method - via cradle with USB cable I've been happily sync'ing my iPAQ to my PC for months now, but today it decided to start being difficult. When I pop the iPAC into the cradle, ActiveSync starts up and goes through the usual routine. I have it set to syncronise: Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Favourites and Notes. It seems happy to sync the Favourites but not the others - which are all stored in my Outlook .pst file (I think - correct me if I'm wrong.) The message I get is: "Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Notes: attention required Resolve items" When I click "Resolve items" I get a dialogue stating: "Items of one or more information types cannot be syncronised. Disconnect and reconnect your device. To view all error messages and dialogue boxes that require your input, you must connect to this computer via infrared or serial/USB cable." Buttons available on the dialogue are [OK] or [Cancel]. Clicking either only serves to take me back to the ActiveSync window and thus back to the problem. I have tried: - several soft resets - several PC shutdowns - updating to the 3.7.1 vn of ActiveSync - deleting and recreating the partnership between my PC and my iPAC (serveral times during this whole process) - creating a new .pst file for Outlook (as I suspected my existing one may be corrupt), then importing all of the data from the old one. (This took ages as my .pst file is 1.65 Gigs) - running the Scanpst.exe utility in windows to check my new .pst file for errors, and none were reported (this also took ages.) - hard reset (aaarggghh!!) The size of my .pst file is mostly because of the volume of e-mail I have stored, which I don't sync with my iPAC. The other bits that I do want to sync and relatively small in volume. My battery is a bit low, but I don't think that has anything to do with it. I'm really stuck now - can anyone help? Thanks in advance.... Rich

I don't have an answer for you, but I feel your pain. I've had several occurences of my Inbox failing to sync with Outlook with same error you mentioned. In most cases, I've had to create new PST file and export everything from the old one to the new one. For some reason my syncs start working after that.
It's happened to me at least 3 times in 2 months, so it's quite annoying. Gaurhoth

It seems like you have done everything in terms of troubleshooting. Some of what you have done is what I would have suggested. My recommendation is looking www.cewindows.net. There you will find an excellent Activesync troubleshooting page that may give you some other pointers to help rectify your problem.

PST size limitation?
1.65 GIGS!
My Gosh! You must be popular! Outlook has a pst/ost size limitation of 2 GB. I know you're not there yet, but this may be the cause. Have you considered creating a few psts and transferring your stuff to them? You can create tons of psts and have them all open when outlook is opened. I honestly don't know what the issue is, but all the things you've done sound right so far.

right. I have been chatting to microsoft support for about 3 hours, and had no luck! they've sugested checking mapi32.dll isn't corrupt,it isn't. unchecking and rechecking the activesync boxes, done, making all of outlook run off pc, done, and hard resetting. None of this has worked!! Grrrrrrrrrrr

Based on your information creating a new user name and then syncing under the new user name will work. However it is no different really than deleting the partnership on your PPC and desktop and manually removing the PPC profile directory on your desktop under the old user name.

Here is why I made the statement (maybe this could be valuable information later). When deleting a partnership in Activesync on the desktop I have seen in some cases that the profile directory does not get deleted. This directory contains two files that has sync information for your particular device. If you are on XP/Win2K this profile can be located on C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Activesync\Profiles\<name of your PPC device>. If this directory lingers around then just uninstalling Activesync and reinstalling it may do no good. This is because if you are still logged into the same username then the path remains the same. If you create a new username and log into the new username then Activesync will create a new profile under a different path due to the different username. Manually deleting the profile could save a lot of time and effort if this directory still remains. I am not sure if you have searched on your desktop to see if this directory remains. In your case using a different username does not change any on the computer other than the path were the PPC profile is stored.

Hi again guys.
Many thanks for all the feedback. It's working again as of yesterday ![]() Trouble is, I can't honestly say why. I have a new PC on order and had resigned myself to leaving my IPAQ redundant until I could partner it with the new PC. However as I've been having several problems with my current PC it's had several windows updates and fixes to sort out a few problems including my anti-virus which stopped working (all sorted now though.) I also archived off some of my .pst file which I'm guessing was probably the reason why the IPAQ started sync'ing properly again - but I can't be sure... Anyway, thanks ![]()
