Activesync Cannot Open The Com Port...
Hi all!!! Need help big time!!!!!
My Ipaq 2210 was working just great on my new laptop (TOSHIBA P20) until I had the bright idea to set up email on my Motorola XP200 smartphone (no comment about the "smart"...). I went to Motorola site, download eamil setting trough sms and everithing on the phone was just working fine; email sinc was just perfect. Than I connected the smartphone to the laptop via USB and i made my biggest mistacke....since I was in a hurry i just overlooked a message which was referring to some change made to che com ports. From that moment onward I'm not been able to sync any more with my PDA.... Every time i put the Ipaq on the cradle, the device is recognized, I hear the ususal blip and the green stuff start spinning; but that is all... it's keep spinning and "connecting" endlessly.... On the device screen itself the connection icon (the 2 arrows moving) after few seconds stops and the x sign appears. On the acticesync window on the laptop the green still spinning. I did everithing I can think of ...obviously not enough ...sigh... 1)Delete partnership and try to set up new one : impossible because it will not prompt me with the set up new partnership screen 2)Uninstall and re-install activesync 371 3)Look to all possible settings in the active sync (laptop and device) Then eventually got this error message which I hope can trigger something on you all: Mcsoft Active sync can not open the com port. To try setting up connection again click ok and follow onscreen instruction. The instructions are useless since just appear the wizard asking to put the device on the cradle and the tha all cycle start again (green stuff....spinning) from that moment onward I got another message on the laptop once I log in: MICROSOFT ACTIVESYNC : THE COM PORT CANNOT BE OPENED. TO AVOID SEEINGTHIS ERROR MESSAGE AGAIN DISCONNECT THE COM PORT FROM ACTIVE SYNC. IF YOU DO IT YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CONNECT USING A SERIAL CABLE OR INFRARED PORT. BOTTOM LINE I'M TRULY ....OFF; 2 WEEKS I CAN NOT USE MY PDA, SPENT TIME WITH USELESS TOSHIBA ONLINE SUPPORT AND SURFINF MICROSOFT SITES... JUST USELESS... HOPE YOU GUYS CAN HELP!!!!! LOOKS TO ME THAT THE SMARTPHONE CHANGED SOME SETTINGS IN THE COM PORT OF THE LAPTOP AND NOW THE COMPORT NEED TO BE ACTIVATED (????) AGAIN??? CAN BE FROM THE BIOS?? LAST INFO: IF I GO TO DEVICE MANAGER ON THE CONTROL PANEL UNDER COM PORT I CAN SEE ONLY LPT1 (PRINTER) AND NO OTHER COM PORTS...IS IT NORMAL?? SORRY FOR THE LONG POSTING...JUST VERY VERY DEPRESSED THANKS FOR HELP ANYWAY DARIO GREETINGS FROM ITALY!!! ![]()

It sounds like you have a program on your laptop that is interfering with the COM port. Check the Moto software to see if it using the COM ports. Also make sure that there is nothing running in the background that could be using the COM ports (such as the moto software). If that doesn't help then there is the option to uninstall the Moto software to see if AS starts working.

Turn the volume down a bit.
![]() All caps make it harder for some to read plus it means that you are screaming (net etiquette). Go into the Control Panel on your desktop and open System and Hardware Device Settings. Check the properties of COM port 1. Usually you will have problems if the COM port Baud speed is higher then 115K.

Oh... That's a larger issue. You may need to check your BIOS to see if the serial ports may have been disabled. You need to check your hardware's documentation to see how to get to the BIOS settings. Also going to Add Hardware under the control panel may put the COM port back.
But as of now your computer is not detecting the COM port.

OK... Once you get the COM ports to show up in the Device Manager then you should be working again.

i did not find any serial port or COM port to enable/disable. that's what I found: ide controller : both fdd: enabled infrared port (FIR) : enabled parallel port : enabled legacy usb address: enabled htt: enabled nothing about serial port...is it possible?? Anyway before exiting i just load the default setting and save them but unfortunately nothing changed....cannot open com port I went just to check on my old laptop (sony vaio) BIOS and there it was "serial port" enabled.. I don't know what to think at this point ....pretty desperate.... about your suggestion to add com port trough the add hardware on the device manger, do you have more detailed instruction on how to do it? i'm pretty stuck... Is there a procedure to enabled back a com port? thanks again have a nice saturday! dario ![]()

I get the same error
I have gone down the create/delete/etc com ports. I'm convinced that's not it. I've upgraded to Activesync 4.5 and that didn't get it either. I've disabled Activesync using ms config and no good there.
Here's what does it for me. If I go to connection settings and change 'allow connections to one of the following" I have to manually change it from 'bluetooth' (which is how I sync) to COM5 before I shut down. That avoids the whole startup dialog issue. Any work arounds to that would be welcome. ![]()
