4155 sync problem when using SD
Hi, I'm a new user and hope to find some help. I'm having a problem similar to what some have experienced but with an added characteristic: it happens when I'm using an SD memory card. (Part of the description was actually copied from an old thread.)
Just bought an IPAQ h4155 a few days ago and installed the ActiveSync Software from the CD (3.7 Build 3083). Plugged in the cradle with the IPAQ and the PPC started to synchronize. Synchronization worked. Everything great so far. Since two days, I,m not able to synchronize anymore . Made a hard reset and uninstalled the software from the PC. After reinstalling ActiveSync (this time latest version 3.7.1 (4034)) and setting up the connection the following happened: ActiveSync on the PC showed the following: 1. Connecting 2. Looking for changes 3. Connected (synchronization error) 4. Not connected To point 4 it takes about 5 secs. Trying to establish a connection over "File","get connected" in ActiveSync, the PPC is not even detected anymore. But as soon as I put the PPC in the cradle again, the whole procedure starts again (point 1 to 4), so it must be recognized in a way (worked in the beginning!). When starting AcitveSync in the IPAQ and pushing "Sync" it shows the two arrows at the top and "connecting" but nothing happens. I then did a hard reset, removed and re-installed ActiveSync with 3.7.1, removed SD memory card I was using, installed back software I was using one by one, testing along the way and now everything is working fine. If I insert the SD card, the problem above comes back the same way. Therefore somehow it seems that there is some relation between the 256MB SD card I'm using and the ActiveSync error described above. Question: Does anybody know why ActiveSync does what's described above when one uses this SD card. (Card Brand is ATP). Thanks, Bob

Welcome to iPaqHQ!
![]() That is a strange one. The SD card should not have any bearing on the sync process in Activesync. This is including File Synchronization as the default location on the PPC that it syncs to is My Documents in the PPC RAM. The only way the SD Card would or could have an effect on the sync process is if you used a 3rd Party app to synchronize directly to the SD Card. I am wondering if you have ever use something like MightySync or if you have something like that installed. Doing a hard reset on your PPC should fix things but if your PC is screwed up by using a 3rd Party sync app then you may need to completely uninstall that from your PC, uninstall Activesync and start over.

very wierd!. Then, when I remove the card and do a soft reset, the IPAQ would start syncing again. I can then insert the card with the unit off and suddenly that My Stuff folder wasn't there anymore and all is fine again. Is the problem related with switching SD cards without turning the unit OFF?

I can switch cards while my device is on without problems. However I can only really do that as long as I don't have today screen plugins or apps containing today screen plugins on the SD card.
I guess I didn't ask about when you did a hard reset. Did you start from scratch or did you do a restore from a backup that you had?

Reading this it sounds as though AS is trying to access the SD card when you sync - I can only think of a few reasons why this would happen: - have you set your e-mail to save attachements to the SD card - open Mail on your PPC and go to Tools>Options>Storage> do you have a tick in the box? - have you previously applied any registry hacks (such as the one to save Avantgo files to storage) which saves the files to the SD card? (and as Ted says - then loaded a back-up?). Both of these would mean that your SD card is being accessed whilst AS is connected - and as you have removed the SD card it cannot find it - and is causing you problems. Hope this helps.

Did you load City Time to main memory or the SD Card? Since it has a today screen plugin and you are utilizing it then it should be installed to main memory.
As a rule of thumb, all today screen plugins as well as apps that contain today screen plugins should be installed to main memory. I fear that even though you did a hard reset and reloaded everything from scratch you was still reinventing the problem if you installed programs like that to the SD card.

But now it seems to be working. I just switched cards with the unit on and it synced perfectly. Don't know what was going on, specially since a My Stuff folder was being created with no explanation. Not happening anymore. Thanks for the help.
