Unable to Install ActiveSync 3.8
When I attempt to install ActiveSync 3.8, the files are extracted, then copied, then nothing - no dialogue box, no message, nothing. I had the same problem with 3.7.1.
I have tried deleting temp files, getting rid of all 0 byte OEM.xx.inf files; to no avail. If anyone has experienced this and has solved it, I would appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks! Scott | |||

Open the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and close down activsync. Then try running it.
If that doesn't work try uninstalling activysnc and then installing 3.8. Oh, Welcome to the site! | ||||||||

I had the same problem yesterday. I tried to install about a dozen times. The installer would extract the files and I could see the files being copied, then......NOTHING! Very frustrating. Finally, I decided to restart my desktop (don't know why I always forget rule #1: Recycle Power), and I had to End about 6 or 7 copies of AS that were running. Once I finally got my PC restarted, it ran fine.

I have experienced the same problem on two different computers. Here is how I fixed the problem.
1. Download the most current version of activesync and save it on your hard drive. Make sure the device is not connected to the computer. 2. Reboot the computer and start up in Safe Mode with Networking. 3. Log in as Administrator 4. Run the program MSASYNC.EXE you downloaded. It will copy files and then stop. 5. Use ALT CTR DEL to bring up the Task Manager. Got to the process tab. 6. End the task MSASYNC.EXE 7. End the task Setup -- leave is_setup alone. The install process will then continue. It may halt for a minute around 92% but should then continue. Like I said this worked on both of my computers. Don't know if it would work without going into safe mode -- ran out of computers to test this on. Best, Geoff | |||

I agree - I've always found that to be the case with them, unfortunately. My problem has been resolved though! I appreciate everyone's help.

Also, I found that when the installer fails to do anything, and then you try to shutdown Windows XP, a end program diaglue box appears. At least on my computer, this is the message:
THe program is not responding: TRSDKd hmmmm I guess it all depends on the enviroment. | ||||

Just end the task - I use Plaxo and this message seems to come up all the time since I installed their software. This shouldn't affect your install of AS 3.8.

Just another note of appreciation and admiration for Geoff_from_Glenside for coming up with a solution for the ActiveSync 3.8 install problem.
I'd been stumped by this one for months, until I came across your posted instructions - which then worked like a charm. How in hell did you figure out? I'd previously searched high and low, at the Microsoft site and elsewhere, for help on this, but I'd come up dry. I'd even tried booting in Safe Mode and using Task Manager to kill MSASYNC.exe, but I guess not both together, and I didn't think to kill the Setup task. Just one complaint: why didn't you solve this problem _sooner_? :-) I was traveling abroad for two months this summer, with my Axim and my laptop, but I couldn't connect them because of this install issue, and it caused my no end of hassles.
