Protecttools causing ActiveSync problem?

I have an hx4705. I have had endless problems getting ActiveSync to work automatically when I cradle the device. I would put it in the cradle and ActiveSync would not detect it unless I run it manually on the 4705, then cradle it and tell it to sync.

I was using HP Protecttools to password protect the 4705. I just disabled it, and ActiveSync worked like it was supposed to (I had a Toshiba PDA for years, and never had this problem). Just to make sure, I re-enabled ProtectTools, and ActiveSync against did not see the hx4700 when I cradled it.

To make it sync, I have to

1. Turn on the 4700
2. Enter the PIN
3. Get the Today screen displayed
4. Insert it into the cradle

If I lock the device (or turn it off, which I have set up to lock it), and cradle it, ActiveSync will not connect. I have tried setting up HP ProtectTools to keep ActiveSync as one of the running programs, but it seems to make no difference.

I see this as a bug. If someone knows of something I am doing wrong, and knows how to fix it, I would be glad to hear it. I have done all the obvious things like reinstalling programs, soft resetting, and so on. I will not hard reset because it's such a pain.

FYI, according to HP, "Microsoft ActiveSync® allows Windows Mobile users to synchronize data between their handheld computer and any PC. With HP ProtectTools Windows Mobile the ActiveSync link is secure to prevent synchronization with unauthorised PCs." (from
http://www.software.hp.com/portal/sw...umber=T2754AAE)

Well, it seems so secure it doesn't work at all without special attention.

Welcome to the site Edwin Fine. I don't use HP Protect Tools so I can't really offer any advice . Have you contacted HP about the issue? I have read through other threads here in the forum regarding people having AS issues with HP Protect tools, maybe a forum search will help if you don't get a response to this thread.

I will contact HP with the same information and see if I get any responses. I've had no forum responses so far from here. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've been trying to get my case to HP on their web site, but they make it so difficult I am about to give up. I'll wait for someone else to waste their time and maybe then we can all get an answer.

I finally found I was wasting my time trying to open a customer support case. I found a "Contact Us" link and emailed the information to tech support. But it sure was not in an obvious place to me.

Hi Edwin Fine, sorry your searches haven't been very productive. I have noticed a number of post to the site with issues of one type or another regarding HP Protect Tools.
