Problems with blocked COM port and MAPIlab Duplicates remover

Greetings,
I have two problems that I think are related to ActiveSync 3.8.
1. I can not access my COM port and even though I have unchecked the "allow serial cable" check box in connection settings, I still can not get access to the com port and when I try, I get an error message that says to turn off ActiveSync. I tried to find a way to keep ActiveSync from running automatically when I boot, but there isn't anything in any of the Startup directories. HOw do I keep ActiveSync from turning on or keep it from taking control of the COM port?
2. I have a program called MAPIlab Duplicates Remover that removes duplicate calendar and contact entries. It would appear as a toolbar in Outlook. It used to work fine if ActiveSync 3.7 hadn't been used, but would dissapear if it had. With 3.8 it is totally gone and reinstalls don't help. Any Ideas?

Thanks, Pat
