Help needed....Active Sync refuses partnership
Hi, I have an Ipaq 4700 which I had activesynced to my pc running Windows 98SE. It worked fine, everytime, no problems at all.
At the weekend I wiped my C drive for various reasons and installed XP Windows Home Edition. I also installed Norton System Works, and Office 2003. Everything works beautifully. Everything that is until I installed Active Sync. I have followed every instruction to the letter, uninstalled it, reinstalled it, tried 3.7 and 3.8 and the same thing happens everytime, which is this. Disconnect pda and cable from USB. Install Activesync program, all proceeds ok, the 'Select installation folder window' appears, hit next, another window appears saying copying files, where it always seems to get stuck at 92% for a while after which the 'Get connected' window appears. At this point I follow the instructions and connect the cable and place the pda in to the cradle and switch it on. A little bleep then sounds and a bubble pops up from the task bar saying new hardware has been detected, and then the windows disappear without moving on to the set up a partnership windows???? Consequently when I click onto the round disc in the task bar to activate active sync, the window appears with everything greyed out, except make a connection, which it won't do because there is no partnership? I might add that I deactivate the norton software and also the firewalls during installation with obviously no affect. Anybody any suggestons?? very frustrating why doesn't it do the partnership bit?

My first suggestion is to uninstall Norton System Works - I personally hated that program, but that's just my opinion...
I assume you've rebooted your PC after AS install and also soft reset your 4700? Try removing the USB stuff from your hardware manager. When the PC reboots, it should autodetect everything again. Try installing AS in Safe Mode. Make sure you are going directly into a USB port and not into an extension port. Have you tried AS 4.0? Shouldn't be necessary though. Anyone else?

My first guess would be that your Windows XP firewall is blocking the A/S activity, but as you've tried out this theory already I'm stumped. I would uninstall A/S, & then do a trawl through your hard drive for C:\Documents and Settings\???\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync & delete this folder if found. (??? = look through all the different paths under Documents and Settings). Then trawl through the registry looking for references to activesync & delete those entries. This will ensure that the next installation of A/S is definitely a clean one. Then try installing A/S, making sure the USB connection is direct to the PC (i.e. not through a hub).

hey there
I've been trying to connect my damn ipaq 6340 and make it work with A\S for hours now. I've looked in every single forum i could find and this one among them and i don't usually ask in fourms , but i got to the point where i'm going to bash my ipaq on my head and kill myself. I had everything working , no problems at all. I decided to install a fresh copy of Windows Mobile 1.1.10, which is teh latest on hp.com for my device. So i was dump and removed all softwares on my "remove programs" list. I'm not sure , but i think there's a damn ActiveSync software on the pda. So since i removed everything, i guess it's gone. I have the AS connected, but there's no Synchronize and and when i press Open, nothing happens. On the pda it says connected to USB. Let me first say that i - reinstalled different versions of AS and deleted anyhing related to AS and cleaned the registry before each installation + restarting of course. - I soft and hard reseted the pda each time. - Tried to install the Windows, but i'm getting a plug the ac adapter to the cradle message (which is plugged ) and therefore couldn't reinstall windows. For God's Sake, or if you don't worship god, for the sake of anything dear to you ... give me a solution. if that's a first and there's no solution , please reply and say "bash it on you head" and let me get rid of this headache :s thanks.

Hmm .. i've just tried another computer and everything is cool.
So the problem is in my PC, i've tried all the AS installation .... could it be that i'm missing something somewhere. I think the problem started after installing 4.1 (wihs i didn't install it ) ... so any ideas what i should do now ?!
