Active Sync Only Lets me connect as Guest

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I currently use active synch 3.7 with my Ipaq 2410. Everything was working ok, i had a partnership set up and only files were being synched, so no mail or calender, no connecting to an e-mail client or sever, just was using it for local synch. Suddenly the partnership stoped working and now the ipaq only ever connects as guest, even when i try to set up an new partnership, it does it correctly but never remembers it the next time i connect. i've checked the log and i get this

2005-11-29 14:19:56 00000664 - Checking existing partnership on device 0x7C38455E.

I just had the same problem yesterday after a firewall upgrade. The IT person who usually solves problems quickly was stumped after working on it for 30 mins. I also hope some on replies with a cure. I was thinking of dumping everything in the IPAQ and starting from scratch or trying to get it to sync to another desk top. That way I might be able to determine if the problem is in the Ipaq or in the PC.

Have either of you attempted deleting all the relationships that were on the PC? Not deleting ActiveSync just all the relationships AND the corresponsing folders that the relationships create? Just an idea. Let us know if it works.

A friend of mine has just met this problem yesterday and I have tried to help him without any success. I have erased all existing partnerships (but not the folders since I have not thought about it) and created a new partnership during the first connection and the synchronisation hs taken place without any problem. Then I have disconnected and reconnected the iPAQ and observed exactly the same problem as in the first post: AS automatically switched to the guest mode. He has even reinstalled AS but this does not solve the problem either. This is very strange and I have never met this problem with my HX4700...
I would like to help my friend but I am rather lost... I will follow your suggestion and erase also the corresponding folders. Maybe something has been corrupted and it remains in the AS folder even if we erase the partnership.
Maybe another idea is to update AS since I see that both Dave and my friend use and earlier version of AS (I myself use version 3.8)...

Can be a virus problem (why this problem seems to happen to several persons in the las couple of days)?

Any other idea?

Thanks a lot for your help.

i hate AS

just had this problem myself over the last 2 days.
i was using AS3.7, updated to 3.8 and then 4.1 still not working. would say connected but not sync or let me explore.
i ended up deleteing everything, going through regedit and deleting anything AS. i then reinstalled AS3.8 AND it STILL would not work!!!!!
i then upgraded to 4.1 again. and it worked but got to syncing inbox and kept crashing out. cant remember the error.

i then deleted the partnership and started again without inbox and all seems fine. i can explore and have been reinstalling all of my stuff but i am afraid to try syncing inbox will have to live without it....

hx4700 , 256 SD card 128 CF card , everything installed to filestore....

I asked my friend to uncheck the Inbox in the options of AS.He has also updated to 4.1. None has solved the problem; he gets exactly the same problem: the partnership is only possible when it is established for the first time and then it automatically switches to Guest... THis is very strange. I have never had myself this kind of problems with AS (well, I have had others...).

This is becoming very annoying and mysterious. Any suggestion and help would really be very much appreciated.

Best regards,

Murat

No one has mentioned resets and reboots. Here's what I did to restore my partnership functionality.

- Uninstall ActiveSync.
- Open Device Hardware Manager and delete the applicable USB connection. Also ensure that you have 'View Hidden Devices' checked under 'View'. Sometimes ghost USB connects can cause problems, especially on older systems.
- Reboot PC
- Soft reset PPC
- Re-install AS
- Reboot PC
Try connecting

As mentioned, make sure that AS has firewall permission, and it couldn't hurt to turn off any antivirus programs running. It's sometimes prudent to install programs in Safe Mode to prevent any other 'safety' programs from interfering.

If you have XP, you might considering restoring your PC to a time when AS worked.

Hope you get it working.

Thank you very much for your suggestions and sorry for my silence (I was out of town). I have some bad news and some good news...

First bad news...

I have tried many things to solve this problem. Here is what I have gathered in this and other forums and on the Mr Herrera's helping web site :

* Check and see of the registration key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services and see whether a key named GuestOnly

has a value of 1. If it does then change the value to 0 to allow you to setup a partnership.

* If you are using a firewall and you do not allow Port 990 to be used by ActiveSync you will connect as a Guest.
ActiveSync uses the following ports (per Microsoft KB article) with descriptions I have added based on looking at the conversation between

the Pocket PC and the PC::
Port Usage
990 RAPI Requests
999 Time Server
5678 Synchronization Information
5679 Heartbeat
These ports are used (per Microsoft KB article) to communicate with your PC Companion.
* Activate NetBios over IP
It also uses the NetBIOS TCP and UDP ports 137 (naming service), 138 (NetBIOS datagram service) and 139 (NetBIOS session service) to

communicate with your PC Companion. If you use a DNS it will use port 53 for name resolution.

* It might be worth clearing out the following key in the registry of all subkeys, uninstalling & reinstalling Activesync, and setting up

the partnership again.
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners"

* Renaming the PDA

* Uninstall,clean everything (Delete C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RAPI.DLL and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CEUTIL.DLL after having uninstalled AS 4),
reinstall Active Sync.

None has solved the problem.

Now the good ones :

The good news is the fact that a Hard reset was able to solve the problem. :-) It seems that this is due to a corruction on the PDA's side... Now my friends PPC is correctly recognized ans it synchronizes.

Thank you very much all for your help.

Best regards,

Murat

Hello,

I have just experienced this same problem two days ago. Mobile 2003 SE on HX4700 and AS 3.8. I could not solve it so it looks like a hard reset.

I had this same problem after I upgraded to 4.2 from 3.8. I could only connect as a guest.

I sync primarily with a desk model at work and secondarily with a laptop at home. The same problem occurred on both PCs, so I surmised it was either due to the upgrade or with the iPAC or both. Since MS deleted the link for A/s 3.8, I hard rebooted the mobile. That fixed it for both PCs. But there has to be a way to simply delete or edit whatever file on the pocket pc without losing all your data on a hard boot
