AS 4.1 with WM2003?

Is there consensus on whether 4.1 works with anything prior to WM5?

We use Novell Groupwise at work. So I have to use Intellisync to get my calendar, address book and tasks over to a PPC device. Intellisync doesn't support WM5 or AS 4.x yet. So I can't start using my 2970 there yet. As we are migrating to a MS-based server and mail system shortly, I can be patient and keep hauling my old 3835 with WM2003 on it around for a while.

The problem is with my personal computer at home. I loaded AS4.1 on it to sync the 2970. But it doesn't seem to like working with the 3835. Specifically with Outlook stuff like the calendar. Lots of funny messages about too many program files that start with "Microsoft" and prompts to recoonect my device or restart my computer. When I do get a sync with Outlook, it sometimes messes up the calendar data.

I see contradictory messages on MS's website regarding this. The download page for AS4.1 ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en) says it supports previous versions of WM.

On an intro page for AS4.1 (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...ivesync41.mspx) it says users or WM2003 or 2002 should stick with AS3.8.

I'd like to be able to use my 2970 a little bit now. But I need AS4.1 to do that. On the other hand, I have to have a reliable, accurate sync with my 3835 for the time being. If I can't get that with AS4.1, I'll go back to 3.8 for now.

Or does anybody know how to have 2 versions of AS loaded and use the appropriate one for the device they're syncing?

TIA,

Andy

Same here. I'm running 4.1 with 2003SE. I preferred 3.7, but can't seem to go back. When I delete 4.1 and try to reinstall 3.7, it won't work. Anybody know how to do this? Are there any benefits to 4.1? It makes both my laptop and pda run sluggish for some reason. Like the screen takes a while to refresh and the calendar/tasks are all messed up.

Most everything I read now indicates that ActiveSync 4.1 is compatible with 2003 PDAs, and many have reported success with using ActiveSync 4.1 with their 2003 devices. I think Microsoft just hasn't updated the web page that explicitly directs 2003 users to stick with 3.8.

However, if you upgrade to 4.1, you will not be able to synch over WIFI any more because this capability has been removed from 4.1. Further, getting 4.1 to work with your PDA may require some troubleshooting as it seems 4.1 is more sensitive to firewall and antivirus settings.

Bigel: To uninstall ActiveSync 4.1 and reinstall a previous version of ActiveSync: Uninstall ActiveSync 4.1; then open File Explorer on your computer, navigate to the System32 directory in your Windows directory, and delete Rapi.dll; then reinstall your previous version of ActiveSync.
