ActiveSync 4.1 Trouble

I bought a new PDA this year and have found that ActiveSync 4.1.0 (Build 4841) is terrible. It won't keep its proper settings or something. Every time I restart my computer, my PDA cannot connect. I have to delete the mobile device, go into connection settings and disable "Allow USB connections" and restart ActiveSync. Then re-enable "Allow USB Connections," place my PDA back in the cradle, and then let the wizard run again to set it up. Then it will work fine... until I restart my computer again, after which I have to go through the whole process again in order to make it work.

Any ideas? Better yet, does anyone know of an alternate syncing software that I could use?

I am running an IPAQ hx2795 with Windows Mobile 5.0.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I'd like to know as well about any alternative to AS. Just syncing PIM is not important for me - all I want to do is to be able to tranfer files to/from PC. Thanks in advance.

AFAIK, there are no real alternatives to ActiveSync. Puma sells some software called Intellisync that will do the synchronizing but it actually needs AS installed. Still, it may work for you (but is a little costly, $60 if memory serves).

If you do not want to sync PIM data, you do not need AS at all as long as you have a home network that you can connect through. The PPC can see shares on the network. Check the Networking your Pocket PC section of the WiFi Guide. for details.

I guess it's also possible to share files using a bluetooth connection without recurring to Active Sync. But can I browse the Internet via BT using my aptop 56kb modem (not a GPRS cellphone modem - which I know is possible)? and besides if Internet browsing is possible can I do the syncing of things like AvantGo etc? And it has just occurred to me thta worst of all without a valid AS connection there seems to be no way to install programmes on the PPC that have a windows installation setup file (not a .cab installation)? Please tell me IS IT SO? (i'm afraid it is)
Then my other question is - since it was my Sunnysoft Backup Manager that crashed the AS (because every time after a hard reset the partnership is Ok after backup restoration - fails) whta is the way AS works on the PDA? How is it damaged and how can it be mended? Any helpful links?

A small addition not to frighten those using Sunysoft backup. in the "about" section of what I used it was written 1999-2003(!) so obviously it was not designed for WM5 and the latest version that is 3.7 is for WM5. But still the 2003 version worked flawlessly for some time so can it really be to blame for the corrupted AS connection?

I'm not too familar with BT but you may be able to use Internet Connection Sharing on the dialup connection for web access on the PPC. Ted Whitely, one of our staff, wrote a Bluetooth Guide that you may find useful for sorting out this issue.

Just got a new 2495 and can sync to my PC with no problem except one annoying thing; when I plug into the cradle it knocks the PC offline. I need it to stay online because I use the PPC for a moving map program in my airplane and it has to be updated each month from a web connection.

I have been all over the MS and HP sites with no luck. I basically have troubleshot it down to ActiveSync because when just going from the cable modem to the PC it still fails.

Has anyone seen this or have an idea how to solve it?

Other than that I really love being able to check web mail and change things on the internet from a wireless hotel room. If it will ever run like my PC, that is, almost without problems, then I will be very happy.

Thanks to all the helpers from this site who take the time to help us newbies.

Cheers
