Open up A/S on the PC, then in Tools/Options untick all the boxes. This won't stop A/S from firing up every time you connect your PPC to your PC, but it will stop any syncing.

What OS are you running? If you're using XP, you could use msconfig, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the box for WCESCOMM. Or you could go modify the registry, but MSCONFIG is a little easier for the non-techie to use.

Obviously "flexibility" has a personal interpretation.
For me this means having the control. Therefore I use a small program to stop AS, and I have the possibility to start the AS whenever needed. In this way in one session I may start and stop AS several times. For stopping I use http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/applications/killSync.zip because is small and (free). For starting, just launch AS. But again, just a personal view.

Not sure if I am the only one but all the time I am at my comptuer, my PDA is in it's cradle syned, I then use RemoteAmp to display the now playing of Winamp. Very good when using full screen apps like a game. Basiclly, AS is always on because it is always being used.

In which case, do as kc8lir says, then when you want to run A/S, just click on the Microsoft Activsync icon in Start/All Programs. BUT...
You will then need to go into Task Manager & stop WCESCOMM, as otherwise A/S will keep on working until you next reboot your PC.
