Exclamation Activesync "Cannot start synchronization..."

Hello everybody,
I have iPAQ 2215 and I previously had activesync on a laptop and it worked fine. That CPU was stolen and I purchased a desktop. Installation went fine but now when I go to synchronize, it tells me "Synchcronization cannot begin because this desktop cannot access necessary information, please restart computer, blah blah blah, and if this problem persisits, call your network administrator." I have tried restarting, creating a new personal folder, re-establishing a partnership, and no success. Only favorites synchronizes, and everything else says "requires attention." Does anyone else have any suggestions? I am running activesync 3.8 and outlook 2002.

Maybe try upgrading your AS to 4.1.

Let us know if that solves the problem.

Thanks for the response. I just finished downloading AS 4.2 and there was no change. I go to synchronize and it gives me the same message "synchronization cannot begin because the desktop cannot access necessary info..." Then it says attention required on all subjects except favorites. Do you have any other suggestions/solutions?
Thanks!

What OS is your desktop running? It sounds like ActiveSync thinks your Outlook data is on an Exchange server or something like that. Does the error message come wth any kind of code number?

Hello again,
I just tried again and there is no code number or anything like that. I have an HP Media Center m7170n desktop running windows XP with outlook 2002 and activesync 4.2 (I have tried 3.7, 3.8 also). My PDA is an HP iPAQ pocket pc h2215. When I go to synchronize, it starts as though it is going to work, says "looking for changes," then a window pops up and says:
"Synchronization cannot start because this desktop cannot access necessary information. Restart this desktop and synchronize again. If this problem persisits and this desktop computer is running Microsoft Outlook 2000, open outlook 2000, click help, and then click detect and repair." There are no codes or numbers, just this message. Hope fully I can do something to get it working, I really need my PDA.
Thank you so much,
Josh

Have you performed the "Detect & Repair" procedure that the message recommends? Open up Outlook on your PC, select Help > Detect & Repair.

Yes, I looked over at the microsoft support page and the solution for almost all of the problems is to upgrade to a newer version of activesync. I already have 4.2 and the problem persists.

I think I would uninstall Outlook and then reinstall it.

I will try that when I get home today. Should I uninstall both outlook and activesync and then re-install? Also, do you think it makes a difference that my computer came with the trial Microsoft office 2003 (including Outlook 2003) and then I installed outlook 2002? Should I remove the trial program?

Having two versions of Outlook could confuse ActiveSync. I think you should try with only one version of Outlook on your computer (whether 2003 or 2002 shouldn't matter).

For now, why not remove Outlook 2002, so you only have one version installed and then try to sync. I'd hold off on uninstalling and reinstalling ActiveSync for the time being.

If you do unistall/reinstall AS, make sure the USB is disconnected during install.

Hello again,
Sorry it took so long to respond. I tried first just uninstalling the sample/trial Outlook 2003. When I went to synchronize, it did not give me the "synchronization cannot start..." message, but it did go straight to saying "attention required" after each of the unsynchronized elements (all except favorites). So then I decided to get rid of everything and re-install just Outlook 2002 and Activesync 3.7 (both on disk I got with my PDA). When I went to synchronize, it gave me the same old "synch cannot start..." message. Do you have any ideas for me now? It's getting pretty frustrating. I appreciate all of your help blueradish and Julie.

When you uninstalled ActiveSync 4.x, the uninstaller fails to delete certain files. Then when you installed ActiveSync 3.7, the installer doesn't overwrite them because they're newer.

Remove ActiveSync 3.7, reboot, log into safe mode (hit F8 before windows starts loading and select safe mode) once in safe mode, open the my computer and delete the following:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync (the whole folder)
The following file's from C:\WINDOWS\System32:
ceutil.dll
rapi.dll
mobileV.acm
uicom.dll

You also should delete C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\NoteSync Forms.

Then install ActiveSync 3.8.
