Using Old Partnerships
What is it with activesync upgrades? Everytime I upgrade it wipes out the old parnership and creates and new one. But it won't let me pick the name. Once I had to hard boot the entire handheld (and lost all the data on it) just to get the device to sync as something other than guest. Then I have to go in change all the speciality applications that independenty sync with the handheld. (That involves calling their tech support and getting the security codes that change daily, the details of which are beside the point.)
The question is, once upgraded, why can't I just keep the same old partnership with the same old name? Do anyone know how to do this? Do I have to go this rigamarole everytime I change activesync?

Delete the partnership on your desktop computer. Then create a new partnership. When the new partnership is created it should accept the Pocket PC name with no problem.

That's The Problem
Thanks for responding, Julie. By delete partnerships on desktop, I presume you mean going into activesync and deleting the partnership there. I had done that several times, but it never works. Details follow:
I am using and iPAC 6515 and, now, activesync 4.5. Under settings, system, about, device ID, the device name is Pocket_PC. But when I created a new partnership, it randomly named the partnership something else and did not give me an option to select the name of the partnership that will match all the other ones. Do I need to go into the registry and delete prior partnership names? If so, do you know where these are located?

This has never been a problem for me and I have deleted my ActiveSync partnership on my desktop and laptop computers several times. I have never had to make any kind of registry change, so I don't know why your experience is different. Deleting the partnership, deletes the name too, so you can then set up a new partnership with the same name. Now, I have three IPAQs and I have gone into each IPAQ's settings and named them something unique. Have you done that or are you using the default name?

Who Knows?
I tried it all ways -- default name, new name, etc. Same result. Problems solved tho. After the third sync, it switched to the device name for reasons unknown and now syncs fine. Thanks for your input.

Well, glad its working for you now. That seems to happen quite alot lately (not working, trying a bunch of stuff, nothing working, then it magically starts to work - must be a gremlin.....)

Fed up with Gremlins
LOL. I hate that gremlin. Personally, I am beginning to think Microsoft applications are infested with them. I'm a hair away from converting to linux-based applications only, which would include scrapping the pocket pc and returning to the Palm.

Wave of the Future
Thanks. That's great! But in the short run, it seems like major headaches could be avoided by reverting to the palm. I am sooooooo not interested in investing a lot of time in what should be a time-saving device. In the future, however, I'm sure a linux-based pocket pc will become practical. I will certainly bookmark the cites and watch for developments.

On a couple of occasions in the past I've had to (in addition to deleting the partnership through A/S) hunt for the relevant profile folder on my PC & delete that as well. Not every time, but often enough to remember how to cure the problem.
