A/S 4.2 is disabling Outlook functions...

I updated to Active Sync 4.2 and ever since I've not been able to sync and still use Outlook while syncing It renders most of the functions of Outlook "grey'd out"; I can't Reply, Send, make a New email; calendar event.

What's also strange...if I input a new item into my PDA (calendar or event) it will now error on those items and not sync them, resolution problem. It will only allow itemst to be input on the computer so basically I loose the whole function of syncing things back and forth now.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Active Sync. I even went back to 4.1 vers. and that did not help now. I'm stuck and baffled.

Now I have to sync, then remove devise off the cradle, then close Outlook 2003, then reopen Outlook to then use it again. It's nuts. Nothing's changed but the update to Active Sync 4.2

Does your Pocket PC run WM5.0? You change back to AS 3.8, but there are some things you'll have to manually delete before doing so.

Since you've got a WM2003 IPAQ, there is no reason for you to use ActiveSync 4.x. In fact, you lose some capability, such as syncing via WIFI connection, and syncing contacts by category. I would uninstall ActiveSync 4.2 and installing AS 3.8 (Or the version that came with your IPAQ).

To completely remove AS 4.2, you need to uninstall it, reboot, log into safe mode (hit F8 before windows starts loading and select safe mode) once in safe mode, open the my computer and delete the following:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync (the whole folder),

The following file's from C:\WINDOWS\System32:
ceutil.dll
rapi.dll
mobileV.acm
uicom.dll

You also should delete C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\NoteSync Forms.

Microsoft no longer has AS 3.8 posted to its website, but you can download a copy of it here:

Thank you Julie!

And thanks for the link back to older AS 3.8 I do have a copy of that on our storage file server. I keep everything. :-)

Well, that roll-back to AS 3.8 didn't do anything. It's still doing exactly the same thing. All functions of Outlook, when syncing or connected, become grey'd out: new, copy/paste, forward/reply/send, pretty much most of the functions of Outlook.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Can you try syncing on another computer to see if you have a similar experience. If not, then it is probably something on your computer. If you have a similar experience on another computer, then it is probably something on the IPAQ (and a hard reset may be needed to clear it).

I'll have to give that a try when I have a chance to do so.
