ActiveSync w IrDA, no USB

Hi,

After reformatting my PC, my Dell Axim's USB connector has broken.
Is there any way to sync with ActiveSync over IrDA without having established a previous partenership via USB?

thanks a lot!

Yes! All you need to do is enable IR on the computer, then set the option on the pocket pc to receive all incoming beams. Then line up the IR ports, Open up ActiveSync on the pocket pc, and select Tools > Connect via IR.

I think that's it - it's been a while since I've done it.

Unfortunatley, this only works if you had previously established with USB. Else, the computer can see the PocketPC ov IrDA to send/receive files, but ActiveSync will refuse to establish any connection...

In fact, I could do this with my laptop (sync with IrDA), but after I hard resetted the Axim to try to fix the USB problem, I lost that possibility, too.

You can establish a partnership with IR or at least you could with AS 3.8. It has been a while since I synced via IR because I retired the computer that I could do this with last Fall, but I know I established a new partnership via IR connection. From ActiveSync's help menu:

In ActveSync on the PC, on the File menu, click Connection Settings.
In the Allow serial cable or infrared connection to this COM port list, select Infrared Port (IR).

{Perhaps at this point, I then selected "GEt Connected" and proceeded to set up the new partnership, I really can't remember the exact sequence.}

Align the infrared ports on your desktop computer and your device according to the instructions in the owner's manual so that they are unobstructed and within a close range.

For pocket pc 2002: On your device, tap Start, tap Programs, then tap ActiveSync. Tap Menu, then tap Connect via IR.

For pocket pc 2003: On your device, tap start, tap Programs, then tap ActiveSync. Tap Menu, then tap Connect via IR.

For pocket pc WM5.0: On your device, tap , tap Programs, then tap ActiveSync. Tap Menu, then tap Connect via IR.

Hi Julie,

thank you very much. Again, it will not work if you haven't a first synched via USB.

I read it somewhere in the MS documentation but the proof is that I could sync the PDA until I did a hard reset. From that moment, impossible to sync.
The ports are well aligned, as I can see in the tray of the PC the IrDA software to send/receive files, but activesync refuses to "Get connected"

Maybe a firewall issue preventing the PC from recognizing the Datastream coming in on the IrDA port?

I'd confirm that the two can transfer normal data before attempting ActiveSync. Try sending a contact or calendar item from your PDA to your PC via IrDA...

I disagree! You can establish an ActiveSync partnership through IR or Bluetooth connection. If you are using AS 3.8, the only partnership you cannot establish through wireless connection is with a WIFI connection. I have established an AS connection through IR with my old computer and I know it can be done.

What version of AS are you using?

Hi,

I'm soooo sorry to have to reopen this thread. I learned my problems are because I cannot get it to sync with my desktop PC (IrDa is USB), it only works with my laptop (builtin IrDa).

The basic IrDa connection is working fine, as I am able to interchange files using it, but activesync will not find the device.

Is it possible to see which IrDa device AS is trying to use? I'm using ActiveSync 4.5.0. I think it is unable to see that I have a USB IrDa device, although the control panel show correctly the device...

thanks!!
