AS connected while un-cradled

HX4700 with WM5 (rom2.01) & fake server trick applied.
From a soft reset.
If I cradle the PPC, active sync fires up on the PC, and everything works OK.
If I then un-cradle the PPC while powered up, the connection icon stays connected, and a tap on that icon says active sync connected. What is worse is that every now and again (while still un-cradled) PPC AS trys to sync, even while powered off, and drains the battery to zero overnight.
While in this stupid mode if I re-cradle the PPC, AS does not work.
However if I power down (I forget most of the time) the PPC before I un-cradle everything is OK.
The attched pic is un-cradled.

Uncradling does not turn off ActiveSync. You need to go into open programs and close it.

Tap the memory icon, then tap "Running Programs" tab, select ActiveSync, then tap Stop.

itask will not let me close actice sync, but the Running Programs tab will let me close it, but only if actice sync is not trying to sync with thin air.

So this is normal? Is that what everyone else does?
I expect to un-cradle, stick the PPC in my pocket, and when I get home, stick it back in the cradle, and everything works.

It's normal. You'll need to close down ActiveSync to get it out of memory. iTask does not always close it down, but usually you can do it the way I recommended.

You may know this already, but when you tap the X at the top right hand side of the screen, many applications are not closed. They are minimized and continue to run in the background. You might want to think about installing a task manager on your Pocket PC that will effectively close applications when you tap the X. Magic Button is a free application that works very well:

So it's normal for active sync to say it's connected, and try to sync to thin air and drain the battery while un-cradled?

You don't want to believe it, and maybe normal is not a good word to use here. But what you describe is typical behavior for ActiveSync.

So it's a feature, not normal.
My work colleague has an atom something, and his PPC does not have this feature. He cradles & un-cradles many times a day without issues.
