Synching old Axim with new Dell desktop PC
I have an Axim 30 (since Dec. 2004) and I want to synchronize it with my new Dell desktop (well, new in January -- so far I haven't attempted to synch it). All I care about synchronizing is my contacts and calendar in Outlook. All my contacts and calendar entries on the Axim are correct and up to date, and Outlook on the new PC has never been used. I don't have those files from my old desktop. What I want is for the Axim files to be transferred to the new computer, but what makes me nervous is this line in the manual: "Your first synchronization process *automatically* begins when you complete the wizard. ... During your first synchronization, information that was stored on your computer is copied to Calendar, Contacts and Tasks on your device." But if I do that, I think the empty Outlook on my PC will wipe out everything from my Axim.

The manual does not address this situation. It assumes you are connecting a new Axim to an old computer, not the opposite.

I do have a backup that I made in January but it doesn't include changes I've made to my contacts in the past six months.

All I can think of to do is enter all my contacts and calendar stuff manually on the new PC but that will take some time.

Can anybody help?

Thanks
Patita

Is the new computer running vista? I have one that I just synced for the first time and all my contacts and calendar moved to the new pc just fine, without wiping out the ax. (although I'm having other issues with activesync regarding syncing with 2 computers, but alas you can read about that in my other thread!)

I would however make a backup of the ax anyway.......actually I make a backup everyday of the ax, just in case.

Hi

No, the new computer is running Windows XP.

Don't you have to have a partnership established before you can make a backup? It's the idea that Activesync will *automatically* synch that makes me a little nervous. I have this image of establishing a partnership and Activesync not giving me a chance to do a backup before it synchronizes.

I may have found the answer to my question, though, in the online help files. I think if I sign in as a "guest" there won't be any synch and I could do a backup at that point.

Thanks
Patita
