USB Not Recognising Device

I have two PDAs - an ageing Axim X5 I have had since they first launched, and a shiny new Acer N321 VGA device (bought only because Dell have discontinued the X51V).

The Acer has recently stopped synchronising with my PC. Every time I try to connect (using ActiveSync 4.2 or 4.5) I get the message "USB Device Not Recognised". The Axim continues to sync every time. The Acer worked fine up to yesterday.

This all points to a fault somewhere in the Acer, but before I send it back can anyone think of any other situation that might cause this problem?

How is the USB connection made? A permanent USB plug-in for each cradle? Or do you swap cradles to use the same USB port?

No animals or trees were harmed in the production of this post - however, several billion electrons were seriously inconvenienced.

I tend to use the same port and swap cradles. I have, however, tried the Acer in a different port but it made no difference. I have never tried having both devices connected at the same time - the results might be interesting to say the least.

I am also looking at the possibility of synchronising the Acer via Bluetooth.

Then that precludes the trouble being with the USB port itself, but it leaves quite a few points of failure with the Acer cradle, as well as the Acer PDA itself.

If you can find a way to rule-out either, that would be the next best route to take. For example, if you bought your Acer from a store-front business, I would consider going there with your Acer PDA & Cradle and see if they have a demo PDA or cradle that you can try using.

Place your PDA in their cradle, and if it works, then your cradle is defective. If your PDA doesn't work, then the connector on the Acer is the likely culprit.

You mentioned the Acer is new, and I am hoping that it willl therefore be under warranty. If so, ask them to replace the defective unit.

The unit is certainly under warranty. It was purchased on-line from Acers web retail outlet, so it looks like I'll have to use the mail to return it.

Before doing that I think I'll try a hard reset just in case there is some problem with any of the applications I have installed causing a conflict of some kind. (I'll backup all the data files to SD memory first though!).

I really appreciate your input on this, and I'll post the results of this test later today.

Normal function restored. Turns out that there is nothing wrong with the device, but there does appear to be some problem with WisBar 2. As long as I don't run it, there is no problem synchronising.

Thanks for the help

You're welcome. You may wish to try out Wisbar Advance 3 (Beta-6) here. It's in CAB format.

It has been found to be a lot more stable than v2 that you were experiencing troubles with...
