Active Sync not appearing on Uninstall List
I've suddenly started having connection issues between my Axim x51v (running Windows Mobile 5) and my two XP computers. I've attempted to unintall Active Sync from the Axim but when I bring up the list under Remove Programs, every program installed on the device is there EXCEPT Activesync. Its still on the device and running but I don't know of a way to uninstall it. I can't just delete the Activesync files without causing problems can it?

You can't uninstall ActiveSync from your pocket pc. It is part of the ROM.

reword the question without assuming the solution.
Example, "I am having a problem syncing my axim x50v, I've tried it on 2 PCs and I only get errors. <Cite errors here> I have done X and X to troubleshoot the problem, could the problem be on the axim?" read the post in my signature on how to ask good questions.... (I am only pointing out that if you are attempting to remove AS from the Axim, you are barking up the wrong tree)

This is what brought me to the above question:
I have a Work PC and a Home PC with their own cradles that have been syncing without issues for a year and half. Now both PC's suddenly respond with the message: "ActiveSync cannot connect to the Windows Mobile Powered Device. To Troubleshoot click Ok" Well that is a no brainer. So, I click "OK". When I click "Ok" the troubleshooter runs and tells me everything is just wonderful with the world as far as its scan has revealed. It then gives me a link to a help page at Microsoft which runs me though a number of things like uninstalling and reinstalling AS on the PCs, and eliminating problems with Firewalls, McAfees and settings in ActiveSync. The most recent thing that I came to on the Microsoft site was a statement telling me to uninstall and reinstall Activesync of both the computers and the PDA. As part of the instructions on uninstalling AS on the Mobile Device it told me to go to Settings>>Remove Program>>>and choose "ActiveSync" from the list of programs. I followed those instruction and Activesync wasn't there. " Mmm....."says I. " I did what MS said to do.....why isn't AS on the list? Perhaps one of the users over in the Axim forum will be able to shed some light on just why it is that I can't find it." So I asked. What I know now: (1) Microsoft doesn't know what its talking about because AS is part of the ROM and can't be uninstalled. I'm guessing some older version of their operating system didn't have AS including as an integral component and they failed to update their trouble shooting instructions on their website. Either that or Activesync has always been part of the ROM and whoever put the webpage together at Microsoft didn't know what the heck he was talking about. (2) Following written troubleshooting directions from Microsoft and asking why something isn't there that they claim should be there is "assuming the solution" Heck, I thought it was just a possible solution that Microsoft was telling me to try as part of the troubleshooting process. Who knew? (3) I don't know how to ask good questions. My only question was "Why isn't ActiveSync showing on the uninstall list?" I'm pretty sure that there isn't a better way to ask that, but I'm always open to suggestions. However, I'm thinking the proof is in the pudding. I found out what it was that I wanted to know, which is AS is not supposed to be on the Remove Programs list and Microsoft was wrong for suggesting that as a possible solution. Quote:

Cool then.
I've seen that message myself occasionally, but disconnecting, reconnecting usually fixed it. (I've always cancelled the troubleshooter since it is seldom more useful than "check the cable") have you done a soft reset and tried to sync? have you installed any software on the PPC recently? have you moved the dock to a use USB port? have you rebooted the computer? (I know 2 pcs, but never hurts) Worst case, would you be opposed to doing a hard reset after backing up any recessary data to the mem card?

Go to Microsoft.com and download AS4.5 again from there and run it - you will then get two choices - repair current installation or uninstall - chose the 2nd and it will be removed from your system. Odd that it will not show up under the Remove Programs list in XP - but this process will get rid of it.
