What does removing and reinstalling the battery do that a reset doesn't do?

I have done all the various "workarounds", e.g. in and off the cradle, soft-resetting, etc. Reloaded version 4.5, redid relationships, etc.

It seems removing and reinserting the battery is the only reliable way to reconnect to the desktop. Is this a clue to what may resolve this particular synching problem?

Any tips?
