How do I set up settings for Active Synch?

Qn. re Active Synch for Aximsite
I just can't seem to get the knack of Active Synch. I read that I can configure the settings but until I connect, all the menu is grayed out for Tools, Explore, etc. and when I connect Active Synch, it immediately begins to synchronize whether I want it to or not before I have a chance to set it up. I feel if I hit Stop that that will corrupt the whole process.

I do seem to get files downloaded from the PC (as I wrote previously though, my Word Mobile files were readable and now they are not, a few are still readable....I haven't had a chance to back up directly to the SD card, even if Asynch allowed me to do that in time! I looked at their Properties and all were accessed at 12 a.m. the other night....??? I am never up that late and the Dell Axim isn't on at night nor scheduled to do anything.)

What is also confusing to me is:
Can I remove files from the Windows Mobile My Documents on the PC and then, if I synch, will they still remain on the Axim device? I don't need all those files constantly synching as they're there to refer to, not to edit.

Thanks for any help.

In order to sync your device, AS needs to create a partnership which is done the first time you connect your device to your PC. In order for you to be able to change sync options in the future you must to this. If at any point you wish to "start again" i.e. make a new partnership for the same device then you can, with your device NOT attached to your PC, delete the partnership then when you next attach your device to your PC a new partnership will be created.

AS itself is not the sharpest tool in the box but it can be a right pain in the proverbial. Pressing Stop does no real harm but will just confuse it for future syncing. You don't really want to be doing this too often.

Once you have made this partnership then the world is your oyster. You can change the sync partnership on your device by opening up AS, going to Menu, Options and choosing what you want to sync. You can also do this in AS on your PC when your device is connected.

How files are removed from your device depends on your sync profile. If you have "Files" checked then AS creates a folder on your PC which it uses to sync files. If, on the Options screen on your PC, you click the settings button while it is on ""Windows PC" you can now tell AS how you want it to treat the files on your device/PC, i.e. where to sync files from. This will determine whether or not files you delete from your desktop PC are also deleted from your device. It is always helpful to keep backups up to date as it is very, very easy to get it wrong and end up deleting a file you think you are syncing! So backup regularly and certainly before any major deletion of files. Once you have copied files to your device, and you don't wish to continually re-sync, then you can remove "Files" from your list of things to be synced in the AS Tools, Options menu and they will remain on both your PC and your device.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much, I've spent the last hour copying files and trying to decipher AS's settings. Nothing happened when I tried to synch so I took the Axim off the cradle and replaced it and then finally I was able to synch, but with the Axim on the cradle I was able to Explore and copy files...OK. When the Dell folder in my PC showed up again it was empty, heart stopped, and then all the files showed up again.
I should take photos as I go to be able to remember, as all kinds of Dialog boxes show up that one doesn't expect, nothing goes the way one thinks. Can't thank you enough, I hope to do it this way next time. No way to set up a "guest" relationship ...I thought it would ask for my user name or something but I just went along with your directions and that worked. Just so grateful!
WM doesn't make this easy.

Just a P.S., just for someone else's information if they run into this. I had to uninstall Office when I first got the Dell Axim as Office took over my PC and Eudora email, I could not make Eudora the default in any way, so out Outlook went. I think that's the problem here, as all the files did copy very nicely but the Word docs were unreadable; the text files and others were fine. So I'll have to install Office someday and get this whole system jazzed up but in the meantime I can't give up Eudora.
I'll just copy the Word docs into text files in my neat new Note Tab Standard program and copy those, now that I know how to do this "my" way.
Thank you again, Britta

there are two types of partnership that AS can do. one is a full partnership ansd the other is guest. guest will let you explore etc but wont sync outlook etc.

when you do a new partnership as will give you a window with all the options of what it can sync. you can tick and untick the boxes to limit what actually gets synced. BUT you can also higlight the options then click on the "settings" button and change the options for that particular option. ie if you tick outlook then highlight it then tick settings you can tell it to only sync the last 2 weeks or all emails also limit size of attachments and how many lines you download.. in your calander you can also limit how much you download etc...
you can do all this when you first set up the partnership and before AS starts to sync the files/data.... after the partnership is made you can go back and change things as you need them...and then resync without having to delete the partnership.

Question change sync folder and e-mail app

Hi!
1. Is it possible somehow to change-determine sync files from PC on other partition than WinXP and AS is installed (C:); for example D:\MySyncDocs AND on Axim x51v on location CF or SD card\MyPPCsyncDocs?

2. Is it possible to change that Axim sync e-mails with Thunderbird Portable directly?
