ActiveSync / Inbox problem after Hard Reset

Last week while traveling, my X5 decided to perform a hard reset. I had a fairly recent back-up so not much was lost. My problem, however, is with my inbox. When on the road, I sync to my server via free wifi. Since restoring my device with the back-up there is a subset of e-mails (those that would have been on the back-up) that are occupying space in my in-box but are not accessible. These messages do not have the mail icon next to them. I can’t open them or delete them and they are not affected by syncing. Also, I currently have ActiveSync configured to sync to my PC when cradled. (I was not able to sync after restoring from back-up while still traveling). When I try to change the settings to sync from the server, normally it requires that it delete the items on my device. Now, I get a message “Unable to remove old data from the device. Please wait a minute and try again”. Needless to say, waiting doesn’t help. So now I am in a situation where I have old data in my inbox and can no longer remotely sync since it won’t complete the operation. New messages sync correctly while cradled. Can anyone help me straighten this out?

I googled your error message and got the following:

Unable to remove old data from the device. Please wait a minute and try again - Google Search

This one looks promising though - follow it through to the end:

ActiveSync Inbox error -- please help - PDAPhoneHome.com

Hope it helps but will share your pain if it doesn't!

Thanks nonentity for your response. The link you suggested looked helpful. This is what was suggested:

“I made a full backup of my device.
Did hard reset.
Restored the backup, but I unchecked the "Email" box in advance restore.

Then I was able to check off the Email box in activesync, sync to my server no problem, and all my emails were back where they belong”

Well, I tried this routine but upon restoring discovered that my basic Dell Back-up/Restore does not have “Advanced Restore” (at least it wasn’t apparent to me) so there was no “email” to uncheck. So everything restored and I still had the old data. But later, when I was wireless, I went back to try to change my settings to sync from the server it was successful and deleted all my messages including the old data. I then used ActiveSync and got all my current messages. So the good news is that everything is back to the way it should be. The bad news is I don’t know why it worked this time but not the previous attempts.

At least it worked!

Hopefully there won't be a next time
