Take a look at this thread. It sounds like you might need to uninstall AS 4.x, reinstall and reboot. I'd recommend doing so with the Axim undocked. I know that device worked on XP and Vista since I used it on both OSes last week. :)
Might want to remove C:\Program Files\Activesync manually after uninstalling, if the folder is left behind.
