I don't know. Maybe it's my WM2003. File transfer works fine, it's just the Outlook that won't sync. I've tried a number of things and finally gave up. I have a cradle both at home and work, so, it's no big deal really.
BTW - It did work when I had AS 4.3. When I upgraded to 4.5 it stopped.

KCallahan: Agreed - File push and pull is fine - but no Sync.
BTW: Turning off the USB has stopped the hangs :) - albeit at the expense of USB based activeSync.
I'm thinking that the hanging may be a symptom of the low level communication with the HTC - maybe that the network activity on the HTC is craeting a virtual NIC that is then confusing my PC's network settings. This would cause a pause whilst the PC tries to communicate with Exchange / ISA via the wrong NIC. After the timeout the HTC NIC is ignored by windows and processing continues.
I'll let things run as they are for a while and see if I get any hangs. Sync is now via pull from the HTC over WiFi, which is not ideal due to the delays inherent in this approach, but it works withoug hanging - and that is a bonus
Doesn't surprise me that we have the same problem. I do know, like Box stated, others have no problem syncing with BT. IF you want my best guess, it has to do with the BT of the computer. I have thought about purchasing a different dongle to see if it made a difference.

Box: Yes I got the HTC to connect using this method, and entered a pass code for each, and sync appears to work - once.
I can't get the ActiveSync on the HTC to always use bluetooth. It seems to want to default to GSM, and I cant set BT in the 'Synchronize All PCs using this connection' box which is wherre I would expect to set the comms method.
RESOLVED: Outlook Hangs when ActiveSync connected - WHY?

All: Box's suggestion regarding turning off the Enable Advanced Nework functionality, appears to be the solution.
On my HTC is this setting is called 'Enable faster data Synchronization'
With this turned off my PC no longer starts an additional network adaptor, which appears to be what caused applications on Windows (especially Outlook, IE, and any program newly called to open a file) to have to pause until this adaptor had timed out: so problem solved.
BT sync is still a mystery, but not a problem for this thread.
I suggest this thread is closed and a new one opened on the topic of the BT sync.
I was getting the same problem on my XDA Zest (WM6.1). It also affected Windows Explorer and some other applications. Switching off the advanced network functionality may well have solved my problem (it's labelled ActiveSync (Turbo Mode) on my phone), but it doesn't explain why Windows has this problem at all.
I also used to get the same problem when VMWare set up two virtual NICs on my laptop. In the end, I had to disable these virtual NICs to stop the hangs from occurring (this was without any ActiveSync being involved).
I think I've now found the answer.
The problem appears to be due to Windows trying to resolve network resource problems (eg. a missing shortcut, or printer, whatever) which it does by pointlessly trawling through all its network connections - and, since it can never find what it's looking for, it is effectively waiting for a timeout from ActiveSync before returning control. This behaviour can be disabled. Apologies for copying stuff from another site, but I can't post URLs yet.
"Click Start, click Run, then type gpedit.msc. Press ENTER
Under User Configuration expand Administrative Templates, and then expand Start Menu and Taskbar.
Double-click Do not use the search-based method when resolving shell shortcuts, and then click Enable.
Double-click Do not use the tracking-based method when resolving shell shortcuts, and then click Enable.
Expand User Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, expand Windows Explorer, double-click Do not track Shell shortcuts while roaming, and then click Enable.
This will shorten the two-minute-long hang to about 3 seconds."
I've made this change to my laptop and I'm now working fine - no hangs and with advanced (Turbo) network functionality still turned on.
