Upgrade to WM5/AS4.5B2 Not So Fun!

I've not posted in some time, but have used a lot of everyone's info/opinions which I appreciate... maybe my time to contribute a bit.

After much personal debate and investigation, I decided to take the plunge and upgrade my iPAQ4705 from 2003SE to WM5. I downloaded WM5 from the HP site and installed both the ROM update (2.01.05) and WM5 using AS4.1 I had already installed some time ago. The raw update went well and I liked some of the new visual/audible differences. I began to load about half of my apps (PocketPlus, eWallet, Garmin Que, Pocket Breeze, PI, Sprite Backup & Weather Panel). I decided to install AS 4.5B2 for really no good reason. This was the start of many hours of non-fun.

I noticed that nothing sync'd. I searched the message boards and found others with similar problems but nothing 'exactly' like my problem. I tried downgrading AS to 4.2, 4.1, 3.8 (with intentions of returning to 2003SE). AS4.5 did something that rendered the other previous versions useless. Others in the forums didn't seem to have the trouble downrev'ing AS as I. I tried removing the mentioned 2 files from my laptop (Toshiba Satalite A25-307). Those being ceutil.dll and rapi.dll. I tried a registry cleaner between uninstalls. Nothing worked.

I hung my head in defeat and went back to 4.5B2 and once there I tested using the base PIM and found most items sync'd but my calendar didn't. I found some help here that suggested a hard reset may help - that multi button maneuver. It did. So that's were I'm at - without much choice and many hours of frustration.

After that reset, I reloaded almost all of my apps and have decent success. I can sync my calendar, contacts, tasks, etc. I've tested the sync'ing between app installs and everything sync's.

Bottom line: I am one to 'eventually' run the latest (but maybe not first). I took the plunge with WM5 and I like it so far. My mistake was to try AS4.5B2 which left 'stuff' behind in the install which kept previous versions from installing or working once installed. I have been able to work with this beta version. My hope is that MS will fix this apparent install/uninstall problem in the final release of AS4.5.

Cheers,
Coniac6

Glad you got things working finally, Coiniac6. You have convinced me not to try AS4.5 until it is out of beta.

I sync my iPAQ between my work laptop & home machine. Something flaked out in AS recently and I am having quite the time keeping files synced properly between all three machines. I was debating about trying the beta but I do not want any more frustration at the moment.

buckyg -- IMHO - wait!

What's left for me is sync'ing with my work desktop (XP Pro, SP2) and AS4.1. I'm not going to upgrade it to AS4.5B?

I don't see any posts suggesting anything with sync'ing a PDA with 2 computers using different AS versions. May be interesting... something for this coming week. Good luck in your endeavors.

I, too, recently took the plunge & upgraded my Hx4700 to WM5. The only problem I encountered was with A/S 4.2 on my work PC; I've had to upgrade to 4.5beta just to get the PC to recognise that there's a PPC attached to it! My home PC seems happy with 4.2, though (strange ).

As it is, I don't use A/S at work other than for connecting my PPC to the PC, as I use Intellisync for the actual syncing (I told my wife that the upgrade to WM5 should only cost a small amount, & now I find myself continually buying upgrades for all the software I use; I think I've worked out what I'm getting for Christmas this year )

I also have been buying upgrades. Throw in a few new utilities as well (more laptop based) in the hopes to diagnose my problem. I've already gone through my Christmas budget.

After my post, I reloaded a couple more apps including Pocket Quicken. I think it had adverse effects and I've since removed it and things are happy. This version should work with WM5 but it would not sync.

I have since found a M$ newsgroup on ActiveSync (news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...pc.activesync). There are a few posts on AS4.5B2 leaving previous versions unusable. No real resolutions.
