Active Sync is driving me Crazy

Has any else had problems with their ppc or phone once they get it loaded with software that it will not reliably sync? I have loaded several programs into my MDA and it synced fine about 3-4 times. Now it is up to its old ways. I am about to give up on sync-ing all together accept as a means to get software into the phone that dosent have cab files.

Is there software out there that will make a cab file from an .exe file.
Is there a good PIM back up software?

Nope, no recurring troubles here.

If you want to troubleshoot this issue further, I'd be happy to help.

All EXEs have a CAB file somewhere inside. If you can extract the CAB files, you're fine. There were some threads on this website that discussed how to do that, but I didn't follow the thread too far..

iPAQs have a good built-in backup routine. And ActiveSync itself can backup your PDA.

However, I prefer the Sprite Backup program for all the options that it offers...

Sorry? To what do you refer? The offer to troubleshoot the issue further?

Could you please advise how the device is not syncing? Is it throwing an error? Is it attempting to synchronize (moving down the item list from Calendar to Contacts, Tasks, etc) but failing to actually synchronize? Is it indicating successful Synchronization but nothing is actually updating? Please clarify. :)

Yes, I think that a list of the software that you installed prior to the problem becoming apparent would be a good starting place for you.

Since it worked at all initially, but then recently stopped working reliably after software installation, then I would initially suspect that some newly installed software as being the culprit. Going hand-in-hand with this theory is the thought that the hardware is most likely OK.

My advise would be to remove this software (one title at a time, with a soft-reset after each) and then a subsequently attempt to re-sync afterwards. If the trouble is due to a recent installation, this should clear the trouble-up.

If you get to the point where all external software has been removed (uninstalled) from your device and the problem continues, then I would consider a Hard Reset. If it starts working after a Hard Reset, then the trouble was likely caused the OS itself.

could be related to software on the pc side. if youre running a firewall or antivirus software, it may be messing up the sync aspect of activesync.

do you have any other pcs around to check if its your device or your computer?

id start there, then move into other issues you may be having with either the device or the syncing computer.

as for cab files... depending on the software, when you run an installer (an exe) it unloads a cab file somewhere on your system... usually found in the program files or activesync directory. otherwise the exe will unload into a temp directory in your local users profile. you can always grab cabs this way if you know which one you need (sometimes theres more than one installer).

a lot of devs are offering cab versions of there softwares any more so this is less a problem for "over the air" installs.

I'm running avast free version and no fire wall. I turned Avast off and tried active sync and no avail.
I have a feeling that it is a software on the phone. I havent tried the 4705 yet... I am slowly but surely becoming phone dependant

It sounds like the computer is recognizing the USB component of your cellphone, but that is not enough to cause AS to launch.

Does your phone use it's own custom program to synchronize data in lieu of AS?

I would also consider uninstalling ActiveSync, deleting the installation directory, then re-installing it with the phone unplugged. The AS installer will prompt you as to when you need to plug the phone in...
