I know you got your problem fixed, but just wanted to ad a fix I had to do to get it to work. I had to ad the IP of the Axim in the pocket host program also:

Jake, you have advantage over many other user. That advantage are about you knowing the PC / Windows / Networking but as for other user, it close to impossible to resolve or fix. Glad to hear you got it fix.

Sevaral days ago installed Peni-cillin antivirus. Soon after I noticed that I cannot sync wifi. Tried everything, Thigs started to work after I switchet teh settings on Peni-cillin firewall from wifi to "Home network". Everything worked immediately.

It works!
First, allow me to apologize for bringing up an old thread. I did, however, just find the solution to my problem, and hopefully my post helps others when they do a Google search and find this thread.
As I mentioned before, I don't run a firewall, but I do run an anti-virus scanner, Norton AntiVirus 2005, which I tried disabling, but it did not help me connect my PDA to the computer.
I found today that when you select "Disable Auto-Protect", you are not fully disabling the system.
You see, it seems with the 2005 version, they have introduced a basic firewall within the Norton AntiVirus application (at least I think it's been introduced in 2005, I've not noticed it in older versions). This new feature is called the "Internet Worm Protection" and is not disabled when you disable Auto-Protect.
I found once I manually disabled the Internet Worm Protection in the Norton AntiVirus options menu, I was suddenly able to sync with my PDA wirelessly.
There are options in the Internet Worm Protection with Program Control and such, but I can't seem to access that menu for some reason. I also found this was the reason why I was unable to have others connect to various servers running on my computer.
As such, I've come to the conclusion that the Internet Worm Protection feature is evil and I have disabled it permanently (If I wanted firewall protection, I would have installed a firewall).
But anyway, I hope that's of some help.
- Alan

Thanks Would for your help.
I too had problems with WIFI Activesync after reloading my operating system. With Norton Internet Security 2005 firewall disabled I could Activesync normally. Enabled it would not connect unless I used Pocket Hosts. It worked perfectly before I reloaded everything. I ran the home networking wizard for Norton Internet Security and now it works just as it should.
Thanks again for helping me go in the right direction,
Steve

Brand new Axim out of the box. Updated to A03 and AS 3.8. I can connect and sync just fine to my Exchange server on the same network. All other network connections work fine and dandy.
However, I can not sync to my PC (aka the tasks, avantgo, etc). Same problems described here. Went through the usual medicine.
Firewall for SP2 is disabled.
Can ping device, device can ping PC.
Enabled network sync w/ AS 3.8
Cross post re-post
When my Pocket PC is connected to the network via 802.11b, I am able to sync to the exchange server with out a problem. However, I am not able to sync to the PC (so tasks, notes, etc.)
It errors out and tells me to restart my device and try again. All firewall settings are taken care of for ActiveSync on the PC. Before I upgraded to AS 3.8, it would even go so far as to beep at me like it is trying to sync. Now I just error out. "Cannot start communications with the desktop computer." "Reconnect your device. If the problem persits, see Microsoft ActiveSync Help."
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=883903 check that
Exact error message on PC
"Critical communications services have failed to start. Try resetting the mobile device, and then connect again."
I click OK and it says Not connected. The axim still says its trying to connect ("Connecting...") and when I stop or soft-reset, I get the sound as if I pulled it out of the cradle on the PC.

Eureka!
After reading, and re-reading this post, and trying EVERYTHING listed here and in any other articles/boards that I could find on this issue, I finally attempted one thing that I hadn't tried.
I have my old B-router running as a an access point, which is plugged into my G-router that acts as a gateway. It just so happens that my laptop, the one I've been trying to sync to, connects to the G-router via WiFi, while I had my Axim set to connect to the B-router via WiFi. Well, it dawned on me that perhaps activesync has issues communicating with PCs that are connected to different routers.
So, I reconfigured the Axim to connect to the G-Router (the same router that the laptop connects to), and voila! It worked, Windows XP SP2 firewall on and everything. Such a relief. Hope somebody else is able to make use of this info. :)

I copied this off the download page for Active sync 3.8. Note the comment about the Wifi sync being turned off by default. I followed the instructions and voila, my Axim X50v synced remotely via wifi - no problem.
ActiveSync 3.8
Microsoft ActiveSync 3.8 is the latest synchronization software for Windows Mobile-based Pocket PCs and Smartphones. ActiveSync 3.8 contains a set of security enhancements that provide a more secure syncing experience with a Windows PC, specifically:
Windows XP SP2 security pop up warnings that appear the first time a Windows Mobile devices is docked have been eliminated.
Remote PC Sync (via Wifi or LAN) is turned off by default. However, users can turn this functionality back on by navigating to File > Connection Settings and checking "Allow network (Ethernet)..."

Hmm - and does anyone have an idea of why sync via wifi is DISABLED in ActiveSync 4? :-(

It's not exactly disabled - that suggests an ability to enable - but, in fact, it's not an option at all. According to what I read from M$, it's because of security concerns.

encryption enabled
I found with my Linksys Access Point that I needed 128bit encryption enabled in order to access the intenet or activesync to my 2003 Exchange Server.
