Question Active Sync Problems Please Help!! I'm Begging!!

Ok so i have had my ppc for a little bit not too long but have just gotten around to finally installing the active sync stuff that came on the cd that dell sent. Except i'm having some problems now. I'm not a total idiot when it comes to computers but this problem is just gettin me and its driving me up a wall.
I installed the active sync program to my pc or at least i think it installed, i hit run and everything so i'm pretty sure it installed. So i thought the next thign would be to connect the USB port from the cradle and add my ppc to it and i turned my ppc on and when to the start-then active sync and it says not connected?!? i have no clue what i did wrong. I've heard that you need to make a 'partnership' between ur ppc and ur pc but i have no idea what that means or how to do it. On my ppc once i was in the active sync program i went to tools and options and it says "use this pc:" with a drop down menu but theres nothin in the drop down menu. can someone please help me i'd really appreaciate it. Sorry for me being so clueless but i figure someone out there must know the answer or at least i hope!!

i'm stabbing in the dark here but are you connecting to the pc through a usb hub? or directly to your pc through the pc's usb port? also, can you confirm that the usb port works...attach a usb mouse and see if it works. also let us know what operating system you are using, not sure if it makes a different but might

one last thing, have you tried rebooting your pc?

i'm connectiong straight to my pc through the usb cord, not a hub. and i know that my usb ports do work cause i use my mouse and jump drive on them all the time. my operating system that i am using is windows xp and i did try rebooting and nothing different happened.
The 1st time i plugged it into the USB port it did respond and gave me some sort of wizard box and i followed those directions but it won't do anything now? any thing else i should try
